Summer Sandshills Prairie Visions #2

I took a second exploratory visit this summer to the Nebraska Sandhills in midJuly. My first back byways wanderings of the summer was mainly in the western Sandhills and was in early June. This midsummer back-roads and byways visit encompassed five days and took in mainly the eastern Sandhills area. Different byways, different wildflowers, and much warmer temperatures this time. Remote, virtually uninhabited, and timeless grasslands. Together Connecticut and Rhode Island comprise 6,757 sq miles and nearly 5,000,000 people. Cherry County in the Nebraska Sandhills comprises 6,010 sq miles and only 5,761 people as of the last census. There are NO traffic jams.

I wonder if you might post an image of your routes, as you did before, and if you perhaps had any interaction with ranchers and successfully gained permission to cross their properties.

i am out of town right now but when I get home I will post my map route. I talked to one older rancher whose grandfather and other relatives had homesteaded 3 ranches in 1900. He how is in his 70's and has all 3 ranches which were never very big but are all along a creek named Betsy creek on the maps but which he said all of them had always known it as ******t Creek. I wandered on some of his ranchland and will post the name of his ranches when I return home. Very beautiful area. I believe it was in southern Cherry County but I need to look at my maps and other pictures.

Here are some photos of my routes in midJuly in green. The yellow routes are from my earlier Sandhills wanderings in early June. I entered the Sandhills area for my 2nd visit from Ogalala,NE and left to return to Colorado via North Platte, NE. The old interesting rancher I talked to was a Mr. Phillips who owns three isolated Phillips Ranches in Cherry County approximately 35 miles NW of Mullen, NE. Mr. Phillips said that the EPA and EPA regulations are becoming extremely difficult to work with.

All of the little Sandhills towns and villages have their own interesting character. I really liked Arthur where Buffalo Bill started a ranch in the 1870's. There's some very interesting little cowboy cafes and bars sprinkled throughout the region. Tiny little Ellsworth along Hy 2 had an interesting cowboy/ranching shop.

"...and no traffic jams..." - and no trees either! I like the apparent remoteness of the area you were in. People would travel for miles to see such a place if it had an exotic name and on another continent. What a treat to have it right here in our own 'backyard'. Thanks for sharing!
