gps and mapping

I have a garmin nuvi 40. It is not that great offroad. I was able to get a location in a canyon. However I can't locate it on a map I was not at all familiar with the area. I won't say I was lost because I did not have a actual plan but I was no where near where I thought I was.

My question is what program can I use to get my latitude and longitude on a map.

I'm not really sure what you're asking. Program on what? Computer? Garmin? Tablet/phone? And what maps?

If you have a paper map with lat/long then a ruler will do it.
