long term 101 project

My old 110 as much as i loved it, was rather cramped for festivals and any dreams of doing some overlanding. So in a moment of madness i thought a 101 would be better. It would be a steep learning curve to this oddity of the green oval badge. When it comes to land rover's its a real marmite/vegimite vehicle, you'll either love it or hate it but never be indifferent. Three year's down the line im still tinkering and laughing to myself when i hear people badmouth them, without ever owning one. I had a limited budget so this is what i started with

On the plus side the chassis was so sound it had never been welded and was fitted with a nokken winch, the down was that the clutch was stuck and it wouldnt start. It ended up being christened the " the creepy coupe" due to the home made galvanized steel body. Which was well enough built, but not to everyone's taste. Which was to my advantage price wise.grant and maddies pics 022.jpg

I have a love/hate thing with 101's. I love them but everyone I have owned or worked on, driven, touched, looked at and thought about has gone wrong in that way that only 101's can

That body reminds me of the old Black Mariah prison vans used in Porridge

I know what you mean, but im hoping ive started to break the back of all the issues. Its like any old vehicle, it need's using to be reliable

All the usual thing's needed changing wheel cylinders, some new brake pipes. Took a couple of week's to scrape the military under sea off the chassis lour 101 006.jpg
Ended up using por 51 paint on the chassis then wax oil over the topour 101 016.jpg

six weeks later off to our second festival in two week's broke down at a motorway service station (cause ended up being perished o ring's in the chokes) 12984_700w.jpg
But on the plus side the inside was warm dry and full of pine cladding Beautiful day's 2010 013.jpg

I reckon the problems all stem from lack of maintenance post de-mob, because the first owners after de-mob all thought "oh it's been over serviced by the Tiffys" It's always annoying little things - like choke o'rings

That back is growing on me

Yes it was kind of roomy, but once the inside was stripped you could see there wasnt a lot underneath the cladding 61721_433251612482_556697482_5646081_4181559_n.jpg
I added a discovery back seat on a frame, which folded down when then bed was in use. The red/brown bit's were bit's of 2x2 wood bolted to three 40x40 metal box section's

The front cross member/bumper was a bit ragged in places and had extra bracing protruding through it168919_494836397482_556697482_6603886_7938001_n.jpg
I stripped it off to repair it, then decided to get it galvanized as it was a real water trap

It came out well, if a little warped in places. Also took a while to strip of the 14 layers of military paint under the green top coat on the nose .

Decided i needed to run it on LPG due to running costs, for the price of a new lpg kit i bought a 3.9 discovery fitted with a complete lpg kit. 74202_451414432482_556697482_5959784_4435109_n.jpg So in effect i got a free engine or anything else i could use:drool:
Eventually the engine went in with a new cam/followers and chain, but minus the fuel enjection

It took a while tracking down part's like door's etc and rubbing down the dash62119_433251532482_556697482_5646075_6041622_n.jpg

I originally was going to re do it satin green, but decided on a satin black to give it a old bomber look interior. Plus satin black is very forgiving

Decided to sort the bodywork out, took a while to undo the 700 self tapping bolt's holding the galvanized sheeting on

But the angle grinder made quick work of the three 40mm hoops
