Best trailer paint

Hoping to repaint my trailer this winter. I previously treated it with some rust preventer, so it is currently all black. My wife thinks it is too bad it is not a khaki/tan color. I have some rust repair to do, then want to paint with something durable that can be done in a small garage (I don't have a compressor). Any thoughts or ideas out there?

I know you are asking for paint...been there, done that. But...For all the prep, labor, time and materials that will be involved - consider finding a good powder coating shop. You will thank me later.

I paid $400 for a homemade box trailer built out of steel. That needs some rust repair. It will probably get painted with rollers by my kids....

I have been told by a mechanic at our city maintenance shop here in the northwest that they use an industrial enamel on all their equipment and was told they buy it at Home Depot, I haven't tried it myself but the feed back on durability of the paint was excellent. I was thinking of giving it a try! Also here is a link to some Marine Flat paint from West Marine I was giving a thought to using.

If you like O.D. green a guy on ebay sells it by the Gallon for $60, I have used it on a military truck and it looks nice but comes out with an orange peel kinda finish, just not as smooth as I would like.

and finally another alkyled outdoor paint that would work well....

http://www.ebay.com/itm/370850818287?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 They also have it in Khaki color, just click on see other items and scroll thru until you see it!

In conclusion it appears as though any oil based enamel paint would work but I am leaning towards the Marine paint as it is a non fouling alkyd paint. Alkyd paint will hold up under rain and snow and will not crack or peel in cold temperatures either.

Hope this helps!

My trailer is painted with plain ol' black rustoleum sprayed through a cheap Home depot (black and decker, maybe?) sprayer that I got for Christmas. I thinned it out a bit with mineral spirits, and it sprayed through the gun like a champ.

Put on 2-3 thinner coats if I remember correctly.

I prepped and cleaned it very minimally and it's still going strong a year later. looks great.

I think it's about $10.00-$15.00 per quart. Well worth it.
