Mitsubishi Montero Gen 2.5 Dash, Console, and Interior LED Bulb Replacement

Just adding to the knowledge base and attempting to consolidate threads.

Here's what I did to replace my interior lights with LEDs (I used red bulbs).

Links are for white bulbs. Other colors are available.

The following quantities are to replace all interior lights. Quantities required for each vehicle component are noted at the beginning of each subsection.

Type T5 Wedge (Type 74) -- Qty: 31
Type T10 Wedge (Type 194) -- Qty: 9
Type DE3022 (DE3175) -- Qty: 7
Type T4 Neo Wedge -- Qty: 2

I. Speedometer/Tach Cluster
Requires: 26 Type T5 Wedge (Type 74) bulbs and 7 Type T10 Wedge (Type 194) bulbs

Remove the two screws on the Gauge Hood.

Don't forget this screw. It's hidden behind a cover.

Lift the Gauge Hood forward and reach underneath to disconnect the wires that attach to these switches.

Remove the Gauge Housing by unscrewing these 3 screws.

Pull the Gauge Housing forward and disconnect the right side first.

Housing pulls out after disconnecting five connectors.

Flip the Gauge Housing over and this is what you see.
Blue sockets have a rubber diffuser over bulb.
Black sockets have no diffuser.

Large sockets fit a Type T10 Wedge (Type 194) bulb. There are 7.

***Observations***
Turn Signals/Hazards, Drive Wheel, and Cruise Control indicators have a green filter that blocks red LED light. Also, the high beam indicator has a blue filter which presents the same problem.

When fitted with LEDs the Low Fuel, SRS, Parking Brake, and A/T Temp indicators stayed dimly lit even when the bulbs were supposed to be off. Those circuits apparently require the resistance of an incandescent to operate properly. Because of this I left incandescents in Low Fuel, SRS, and A/T Temp. However....using an incandescent in the A/T Temp indicator caused the LED in the Parking Brake indicator to turn off properly, so I left an LED in the latter indicator.

The dimmer switch functions properly.

II. Compass Gauge Cluster.
Disassembly instructions consolidated from my post here.

Requires: 1 Type T10 Wedge (Type 194) bulb and 2 Type T4 Neo Wedge (10mm base) bulbs
The Voltmeter and Oil Pressure Gauge share 1 Type T10 Wedge (Type 194) bulb and the Compass uses 2 Type T4 Neo Wedge bulbs.

Type T4 Neo Wedge bulbs:
2 lumen version on left and 10 lumen version on right (I found the 10 lumen bulbs to be too bright).

Pry off both plastic screw caps on either side of the gauge cluster hood and unscrew both screws.

Lift gauge housing and disconnect wiring connector.

Flip housing over and unscrew 2 lower (outer) and 2 upper screws to separate gauge housing from dash trim.

Remove 6 screws attaching clear plastic lens.

Tilt compass forward.

Both bulbs will be visible at the rear of the gauge.

Turn bulb base with a slotted screwdriver and remove. I had to use a small hooked pick to fish the bulb out.

III. HVAC Controller
Requires: 2 Type T5 Wedge (Type 74) bulbs.

Remove the Radio/HVAC bezel by removing these 2 screws.

Remove these screws to loosen the HVAC Controller.

Radio must also be removed for access.

The HVAC Controller will not pull out enough for access until you disconnect this Vent Cable End from the pin its connected to.

It is located under the dash, above and directly to the right of the gas pedal. In order to remove the Vent Cable End from the pin, follow the Vent Cable back toward the HVAC Controller approximately 2 inches until you find a cable retainer. Free the Vent Cable from the retainer, the Vent Cable End will slide off the pin, and this will allow just enough slack to pull the HVAC Controller outward for access to the bulbs.

The first bulb is located on top. The bulb housings are press fit and just pull out, they are not twist release.

The second bulb is accessed from below the HVAC Controller on the lower left side buried behind where the outside air/recirculation lever is. I needed an inspection mirror to find it and had to remove it by feel, but it's there.

Remove Ashtray from Center Console.

VI. Ignition Switch Surround
Requires: 1 Type T5 Wedge (Type 74) bulb

Remove 5 screws on lower Steering Column and remove upper and lower Steering Column Trim.

Remove two screws on Wiper Stalk Assembly and remove Wiper Stalk Assembly from Steering Column.

VII. Center Console Shift Indicator and Cigarette Lighter Surround
Requires: 1 Type T5 Wedge (Type 74) and 1 Type T10 Wedge (Type 194) bulb
Center Console Shift Indicator uses a Type T5 Wedge (Type 194) bulb.
Cigarette Lighter Surround uses a Type T10 Wedge (Type 74) bulb.

Open Center Console Armrest storage area to expose these four screws on the storage area's base. Remove them.

Remove switches and/or switch plate from above the cup holders on the Center Console. Unscrew these two screws with a long phillips (I don't have the cup holders installed but I believe you will need to remove them. They slide forward out of the Center Console as a unit if I remember correctly).

The Center Console rear section can now be tilted back to reveal this screw. Remove it.

Remove Parking Brake surround.

Unscrew Transfer Case Lever knob.

The Center Console front section can now be lifted up enough to expose the underside of the Cigarette Lighter. The bulb twists out here.

The dash and console lights are plenty bright in red. The Map, Passenger, Cargo and Door Courtesy lights in red seem dimmer than the light I'd imagine white LEDs would produce (I actually ended up wiring additional white LEDs in my interior for this reason).

It'd be great if someone with white LED interior lighting in the stock fixtures could post some pics for comparison.

Also, I'm wondering if others that converted the Speedo/Tach Cluster to LEDs had problems with some of the indicators staying dimly lit, namely SRS, Low Fuel, A/T Temp and Parking Brake, even after they were supposed to be off?

I've mine done in LED,none of the other lights stay on,they are 501 LEDs that go into the blue bases. They work well,but the lighting for the top of the coolant temp is a bit dim too

I had a load of adhesive LED strip and just stuck it on around the factory interior roof light and now it is plenty bright inside.

Oh, one question... does the interior light dimmer rotary switch/rheostat (to the left of the steering wheel) work properly with LED bulbs installed? Or do you lose that adjustable brightness control?

Good question. I'm wondering also if those LED's have dimmer circuitry built into them.
