It looks like a beta 2 version of the next iOS release (7.1) has a "car display" mode. The article linked above suggests that car display means you will be able to link your iPhone through cable or Bluetooth wireless to a compatible vehicle touchscreen. You'll be able to use the touchscreen to manage messages, music, and navigation (Apple Maps, for better or worse).

Apple has arrangements in place with 35 auto brands to support music playback from an iPod or iPhone, using a cable connection to a touchscreen provided by the manufacturer. The "car display" mode expands the ways this connection could be of use.

Bottom line: Some day soon we won't need to shop for a separate navigation tablet for in-vehicle use.

It's a wonder how this has taken so long to accomplish. I've wondered for years why you can't drop your iPhone into a port that displays its screen on the vehicle display and allows control of the device from the vehicle screen. And why the iPhone/iPad couldn't display a whole variety of vehicle data when linked. It has to be resistance from the vehicle manufacturers believing they will lose sales of add-on gadgets if the phone/tablet can do it better. It would be simple to forbid certain content from displaying on the vehicle, movies etc., to comply with safety requirements. This is a step in the right direction.

Interesting.

We have a `13 A4 with nav and I find it annoying most of the time. First car I've bought with nav... wouldn't do it again unless I was forced to as part of an option package. If I could use my own apps that would go a long way towards being less annoying. I really doubt the manufacturers would allow that... liability and such.

In certain 2014 Civic models, Honda is offering a smartphone navigation app. It's called HondaLink Navigation. Price is $60. The app displays results on the phone, and when linked by cable, on the 7 inch LCD display that is standard in the upscale Civic models. That sounds expensive, but it's not too bad when compared to the $1500 Honda charges for its onboard navigation system with road maps on DVD.

Here's more about the HondaLink Navigation app

I'm sure third parties are working on additional ways to link smartphones to the vehicle in-dash LCD display.
