scratch build Trailer for my diesel Jeep Cj5

Hello, This is my first post on this site... I have been wanting a trailer for my jeep for a long long time. I would love an M416 or something similar but cant find one at a reasonable price. So I think I will just build my own. I have been doing a lot of reading and research. Can anyone give me a good source for my axle? I want it to be the same width and bolt pattern as my jeep. (5x5.5). I haven't started anything yet but am ready to start ordering materials. I will try to keep this post updated. here is the build thread for my jeep.

I don't have any good pictures of my jeep completed but here is a video of my playing with it in the snow and a test drive. as well as a few picture of it while I was building it.

The pulling vehicle will be my 79 cj5. It has a Mercedes 5cyl turbo diesel, t18 4-speed, dana20 tcase, 7.50-16 MT tires, 3.73 gears. I will be using it for firewood/mulch and occasional camping/canoeing

You said you liked the M416 but decided to scratchbuild a trailer because you can't find an M416 to buy, how about a fiberglass military replica kit?

Thanks for the info! That would be pretty neat but im guessing out of my price range.... Do you have any in on it? Also, I wonder how fiber glass would hold up while getting pelted with pieces of firewood?

I'm planning my re-build of an M416 I found and currently looking at axle options too. So far have talked with Redneck Trailer and KMTparts.com. Might check with both of those suppliers about a custom axle. Best if you find a supplier with a warehouse near you as shipping was very high, but can usually pickup for free at a warehouse.

Cool Cj5. I sold mine to a good friend. He and I are currently building trailers. Mine is a m416, and he is building a Bantam T3-C (which I sold to him also). I will be pulling mine with my 1982 CJ8 Scrambler, and he with his 1981 CJ5. I have one trailer for sale. It is a m100 (similar to an m416, but with round fenders). I recently posted it for sale over on CJ-8.com. Here is the link, http://www.cj-8.com/forum/showthread.php?41656-M100-trailer-for-sale. I am willing to work with you some on the price. Would love to see a CJ owner with it. I will be offering it for sale on here soon. BTW, I wanted the Mercedes diesel engine in my Scrambler so bad. After what I spent to have my 258 remanufactured twice (long story), I could have more than done the MB swap.

Sooo Cool!!!

I went back and watched the videos. I love the way it looks, AND sounds. Man, I should have done the Mercedes Benz swap.

THanks Scramfan! I might be interested in your trailer, I tried the link but couldnt view the pictures. Could you post some on here so I could see it. Are you making any trips to pa anytime soon? :bike_rider: thanks -MF

m100

It is in very good condition for its age. It is a 1952. Original condition, except the rear was cut out by the TVA to put a door and for the paint, which was done a very long time ago by the TVA. It was used to house a generator and had a cover on it. Floor is in remarkable shape, except for a couple of rust spots in the rear corner. Floor is flat, not wavy. I had it aligned, and it has new tires on it. Tires have less than 50 miles on them. Pulls very nicely. It is located in central KY. We don't title trailers in KY, but I can provide a bill of sale. I'm asking $900.

For $1,200, I'd just build. I was able to pick up my M416 for around $400 and if I were going to do it again, I would just build.

Ok so Tonight I am going to look at an old Toyota pickup that has a Homemade flatbed on it that I think will make a sweet tub for my trailer. It is a little bigger than a 416, Its built well and has a tailgate. If I get it I will post pictures. Also, When ordering steel, what size tubing will a 2" receiver slip into? Thanks.

Thanks! That pop up is very cool, but I need my back seat and The ability to haul wood and brush on occasion. That's why I'm going the trailer route. Do you have any pictures of the inside?
