Our new toys...

We sold the old 17' Grumman aluminum canoe a couple of months ago and used the money to buy kayaks. Wife is a fisherman and she thought flat-topped 'yaks would be the best bet for us since we're not looking for whitewater or even river water, lakes are fine for us.

Took them out for the first time Memorial Day weekend to John Martin Reservoir in Southeastern CO.

Getting ready to leave:

Mount couldn't have been simpler: Yakima Railgrabbers with 78" bars, 'yaks mounted upside down on the bars and cinched in place with ratchet straps.

A couple of folks here thought the 66" bars would work better, and it's possible they might have - but when I went to REI, the price was the same for 66 or 78, so I got the longer ones. They still don't stick out past the mirrors so they are not an obstacle to maneuvering or parking.

I'm a big fan of the wider bars- you can always cut them down if you decide to but they're handy for adding things like bikes, fresh water reservoirs, fishing rod tubes, etc. They're also handy for hanging things off like lanterns and solar showers.

This 16' Valco Bayrunner was designed for the California market to those that needed something light enough launch and run off of the beach in Baja. I would love to hit the big surf but for now I only ride the waves coming from huge cabin cruisers at Lake Pleasant. We hit lake Bartlett yesterday. The wife and dog love the remote beaches only accessible by boat. That tall deep V front and flat stern let it take on huge swells or run very shallow water.

You are in the perfect place for a Whaler I bet.

Yep! Boat launch to Lake Washington is 2 minutes from my house. Pretty much every nice day after work it gets taken out for dinner on the lake. (its a whaler knock off though :) )

I love this pic. It has a real WTH vibe to it. Like why would you be towing a boat in the desert?
Rain could happen and I'll be ready:sombrero: Actually it's a photo I snapped this morning off of my back porch for this thread. If you head about 14 miles to the front of the van you will hit a lake and about 25 behind it to another one.

See...We really do have water. Not much but it's water.

Picked me up a two seater and single seater kayaks today. Going to clean them up and paint them. I got a killer deal on them.

Plan on using them for ducking hunting and fishing. The single seater has rod holders

I love it, truck and boat porn! Here's my rig with my marathon racing cedar strip C-2. It's 18.5 feet long tandem that only ways 23 lbs empty! Another with my paddleboards.
