What a way to get acquainted with a new vehicles! Flew out of Bellingham, WA (Flew Allegiant, no complains for the price, if you can fly light, you can fly cheap). Flew into Mesa, AZ (Used to live there, parents still do). To make a long story short, I bought a one owner 1997 Tahoe LT 4x4. Had my dad (master mechanic), check it out prior, got his green light, transferred him the money and had him take care of the purchase.

Arrived in Mesa about 5:45pm on Friday, parents picked me up, in the Tahoe of course. Had priorities to take care of. Went straight from the Airport to Serrano's to get some much needed Mexican food! Went back to my parents place, spent some time with them, got some sleep. Woke up Saturday and did breakfast with the parents/grand parents/mother in law. Back to their place, said goodbye and hit the road.

My plan was to drive through northern Arizona, a quick loop into Colorado as I wanted to go to four corners, and then into Utah, up into Idaho, across Oregon, and finally back to Washington.

I've been all over AZ in the past, so it was a quick blast up I-17 through Flagstaff, I thought about hitting the Grand Canyon, but been there done that, and had limited time. So I continue onto 89, to 160 past Tuba City and the vast Indian Reservations. Continued up 160 to Four Corners. This is where I will begin posting pictures of the trip.

I arrived at 4 Corners National Monument about 7:45 PM and was pissed when I saw this:

There were a few other people there, and we were all standing around talking. All of us were upset that we came all this way to find it closed and we really didn't want to waste the trip. Shortly after, another car pulls up, a couple get out and say hello etc, they tell us they talked to some people at a gas station down the road and said people hop over the fence all the time and that nobody cares. From the gate to the monument is about a 1/3 of a mile walk. They proceed to hop over, and make their way down. As they are, through the darkness I see a few flashlights walking towards the fence, turned out to be about 7 people who had already done the same. A family with several young kids to boot. At this point, it was go-time. So a few of us that had been debating what to do, hopped over and made our way down to the monument.

The result:

It was actually one of those things that made the experience more memorable. Added a bit of excitement.

After four corners, it was time to get back on the road, continued up 160 into Colorado. My trip through Colorado was dark, so no pictures unfortunately. Stopped at Ute Mountain Casino to fill up and stretch my legs. Then it was onto the final stretch for the day. Moab was my destination. Stopped at the Utah/Colorado border to take a picture:
IMG_8919_zpsfa9d26a7.jpg

..and ended up spending about 30 minutes star gazing. The stars were breathtaking. Not a cloud in sight, on a crisp cool night and elevation was about 7k ft or so. Beautiful.

Into Utah now, still determined to make Moab tonight. I had some serious regrets passing through Canyonlands at night. I really would have liked to see the area in daylight. Such is life, I will be back! Made it into Moab at about 11pm. I was planning on just sleeping in the Tahoe. Tried several hotel parking lots just to park in and sleep for the night. They were PACKED. Every hotel in Moab was booked solid. I finally found a spot in the back of the Days Inn parking lot. Good enough. Laid the back seat down, and set up my bed for the night:

Was actually pretty comfy. Didn't sleep for crap though. Woke up after about an hour of sleep, and stumbled into the Peace Tree Cafe. Should have known better, I'm a meat and potatoes type of guy. This was not that kind of place. Got some "whole grain" Klondike Pancakes and some Roasted Potatoes. Nearly $20 for breakfast for just myself. Denny's would have been better. Ha.

Hippy waiter at Peace Tree "You gotta go to Arches MANNNNN". I planned on it, but again had limited time. Pulled into Arches:

Line to get in was long as hell. Ugh, didn't really have time to follow a bunch of tourists at 5mph through 18 miles of national park road. So I turned back and headed off.

I couldn't be in the Moab area and not get any red dirt on the tires though. That would just be unacceptable. So about 10 miles or so north of Moab, I pull out into the Gemini Bridge area:

The trail was 8.3 miles each way. I went maybe 3 miles down the trail. Really wish I had more time. But I was also in a stock 97 Tahoe, that I was unfamiliar with and also unfamiliar with the trail ahead. So I didn't want to push my luck, especially with over 1000 miles left in the trip. Still made for some nice pictures though!

Anyways, I'm going to stop there for now. I am back at work today, and just used my Lunch to post up to this point. Still a lot left, and a lot of pictures I still need to go through. I will update this hopefully later today with the rest of the trip.

Very nice! I still think I might replace the Safari with a Tahoe or Yukon when the time comes. Are you keeping your Astro?

Is it me or could you use some coilover shocks in the back?

The Tahoe is actually replacing the Astro. Need to update my sig.

There's a few thing's that the Tahoe needs attention. I stopped at a rest area in BFE Utah, and checked the fluids, noticed brake fluid was a bit low. Found the Master Cylinder is leaking a small amount. Topped it off in Spanish Forks Utah, and it didn't need any more the rest of the trip. In the next month or so, I will replace the Master Cylinder, plugs/wires/coil etc. I changed the oil before leaving Arizona, and the plug hole is stripped, got a plug one size up for the time being and "made" it fit. But, I will probably end up replacing the oil pan. And yes, it does have a bit of sag in the rear! I don't plan on lifting it, but it will definitely get leveled out. Need to look at the options, whether it's just add a leaf etc.

A couple thoughts in comparison since you're in a similar boat. The Astro is a great platform, however I thought I would miss it more than I do. I actually don't think the Tahoe/Yukon gets enough love in the expo community. Fuel Mileage in the Tahoe during the trip was roughly identical to the Astro on trips. In fact it may have been a bit better, I was cruising 80-85 most of the trip and calculated 20mpg a couple times. The Tahoe has more interior space. In the Van, I had 4 captains, and would remove them for trips to sleep in it. I was more comfortable in the Tahoe with just the one side of the back seat folded down, than I ever was in the Astro. The 4.3l is a great engine, but the vortec 350 is superior in every way. The power in the Tahoe made a huge difference in the mountains compared to the Astro. The Astro would be tapped out just going up to Snoqualmie Pass which is about 3000ft. I was cruising at 7-8k ft in altitude in the Tahoe at 80 and couldn't even tell I was that high in elevation.

Working on the Tahoe = Hands down easier. It's nice having a rig again that doesn't have the engine under the dash. AWD in the Astro is nice, but real 4WD is better.

I could go on and on, but I won't right now. I was on the Astro/Safari bandwagon pretty hard for a while. Thought it was a great platform, that was under appreciated. And it still is. I just feel that for at least myself, the Tahoe is superior in every facet of what I use the vehicle for. More interior space, more power, more comfortable, more towing capability, same if not better fuel mileage, easier to work on, more capable off pavement etc.

We are definitely in the same boat. The only remaining advantages for us to stay in an Astrofari are:

Sliding door is safer for loading both kids curbside.

and

These vans are more efficient in terms of cargo vs. overall length. Safari fits easily in my garage whereas a Tahoe would be tight.

Otherwise, I think I will keep an eye out for a late '90's or early 2000's Tahokonaliscalade.

Looking forward to your updates!

How old are your kids? I have one, a 2 year old. I as well as his mom has found it easier to load him into his car seat in the Tahoe than in the Astro with the sliding door.

My girls are 8 and 6. I find it easier to corral them into one door (older one is a bit of a "runner"). Once they are in the middle row, I have to hunch over and buckle them in, which isn't fun. When it's the four of us, I don't mind taking the Suzuki because each of us takes a kid to their door.

Sounds like a great trip....I look forward to seeing more. I am with you on the Tahoe/Yukon use. I have a Yukon and find it works for our entire family and dog camping (yes it may get a little "Beverly Hillbillies" at times with 3 kids, GSD and gear! ha!) but also great for just me. I have slept in it the same way in Maine as you showed sleeping on one side and with all my gear on the other side and its perfect. Plenty of room, comfortable and can get me places I need to go. A rock crawler? Nope...not by a long shot. But so good when we have all the kids etc. Best of luck with it!

Cont..

Once you get north of Moab, the drive gets a bit boring, not much to see really. Good area to make up some time. The neatest thing I saw along this stretch was:

Stopped around Spanish Forks, Utah.

I kind of blasted right through Salt Lake City, I was pretty damn tired and my goal for the day was to make it to Boise, Idaho.

Finally made it to Idaho, but still had a long drive to Boise!
IMG_9121_zpsae34054b.jpg

Just rural farm land for the most part, so not many photos. Made it into Boise just in time for a spectacular sunset.
IMG_9154_zps67405fd6.jpg

I explored downtown Boise a bit. Not a bad little city, I liked the vibe of the Downtown area.

Panda Express for dinner, then it was time to crash. And I crashed hard. Had a hell of a time waking up Monday morning. Got a really late start, didn't leave Boise until about 11:30am.

Blasted across the rest of Idaho and finally into Oregon.

Crossed the 45th Parallel

Never seen a bridge that lifts like this

Waterfall along the Columbia River

I regretfully didn't have enough time to take many pictures in Oregon. The Columbia River Gorge area is simply beautiful though and I will definitely be returning to the area to explore some more!

And again, that's it for now. I will post some miscellaneous photos from across the trip a bit later.

Thanks! That's just it, majority of us don't need a rock crawler. The Tahoe/Yukon is a good combination of capability, versatility, comfort etc. I predict this Tahoe being a part of our family for a long long time to come.

It worked surprisingly well. Since I flew to AZ with nothing but a backpack, it was a gift from my parents as I left. LOL. I would recommend 2 if temps are chilly though! It was 34 or so in Moab that night, and I had to fire up the Tahoe and blast the heater for a few several times. That was part of the reason I didn't get any sleep..Couldn't stay warm!
