Why Tibetan Altitude Matters

**********************************************

Over in the “High Altitude Heating” thread I've made a strong pitch for Tibetan altitude as an important design consideration for a “globally capable” expedition vehicle – see page 3, post # 21, at http://www.expeditionportal.com/for...BEST-High-Altitude-Solution-for-Heating/page3 (standard ExPo pagination).

Just recently I posted in that thread about:

 1. Altitude sickness
 2. German tour-operators that lead motorhome convoys on trips around central Asia
 3. Two recent “Mercedes Benz Offroad” G-wagen trips, Berlin to Kolkata, that crossed the Tibetan plateau in 2011 and 2012, each with a full complement of paying customers
 4. Another “Mercedes Benz Offroad” G-wagen trip, Stuttgart to Hanoi, that will cross the Tibetan plateau in August/September/October of this year (2014), again with a full complement of paying customers
 5. A series of blog-posts from another website, that discuss diesel-engine issues at Tibetan altitudes
 6. How overlanding possibilities appear from Europe
See page 5, posts #43 - #47, at http://www.expeditionportal.com/for...BEST-High-Altitude-Solution-for-Heating/page5 (standard Expo pagination).

I've probably posted enough in that thread to convince those whose “automotive imagination” is truly global that Tibetan altitude matters, and should most definitely be taken into consideration when designing a world-capable expedition motorhome. But those who've had negative experiences with high-altitude, who've gotten sick above 14,000 feet, and/or who are not European, will probably still disagree. This is an American website, after all, and Tibet is a very, very long way away from the United States.

Some Americans reading about Tibet in the “High Altitude Heating” might think to themselves,

“What's that got to do with me, or anywhere that I am likely to go with my expedition vehicle, in this lifetime?”

It's then perfectly understandable if American expedition motorhome fabricators and their customers are satisfied with vehicles designed to handle just Altiplano altitudes in the Andes, i.e. roughly 13,000 feet. Why over-design a vehicle for altitudes it will never encounter?

In that thread, Diplostrat suggested that I may be “overthinking” the whole question of high-altitude cooking and heating, but I'm not so sure. As suggested in that thread, for European overlanders geography “feels” different that it does for Americans, because Europeans are Eurasians. Europeans live on a Eurasian continent that includes Tibet. Indeed, a Eurasian continent that includes China and India. After having researched and created those posts, and then researched some more, I am now even more convinced that Tibetan altitude matters – for European overlanders.

Moreover, Tibetan altitude matters especially for the design of the “TerraLiner”, a 6x6, fully integrated, “bad-road” motorhome that should in principle be able to go just about anywhere.

I'd then like to post some more material that continues the argument. However, the “High Altitude Heating” thread is LoRoad's creation, and its theme is “Heating”, not expeditions that have crossed Tibet. So what follows next in this thread is a series of posts that continue the argument first developed over in “High Altitude Heating”; a series of posts that demonstrate just how strongly Tibet now figures in specifically European “automotive imagination”.

************************************

1. The Importance of Central Asia in European Automotive Imagination

************************************

To repeat, Europeans are Eurasians, and they live on a landmass that includes Tibet. So from the earliest days of automotive history, crossing Eurasia has served as a kind of “litmus test” of automotive technological prowess.

The first Paris-to-Peking rally was held in 1907, over 100 years ago – see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peking_to_Paris and http://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/news/vintage-speed/the-worlds-10-longest-auto-races-3#slide-3 :

945x340_crop.jpg Peking_to_Paris_1907.jpg

Paris-to-Peking has been repeatedly re-enacted by Europeans ever since the Soviet Union dissolved, and it has once again become possible to cross Eurasia by private motorcar. See for instance http://www.endurorally.com , http://www.endurorally.com/pages/past-rally-events , http://www.endurorally.com/pages/peking-to-paris-1997 , http://www.endurorally.com/pages/2007-peking-to-paris-motor-challenge , http://www.endurorally.com/pages/5th-peking-to-paris-rally-2013 , http://www.endurorally.com/pages/the-peking-to-paris-motor-challenge-2016 , http://www.abc.net.au/tv/pekingtoparis/default.htm , http://www.shanghaidaily.com/feature/Modern-Marco-Polos-drive-along-Silk-Road/shdaily.shtml , and http://en.sib.fm/stories/2013/06/17/hold-on-old-sport :

705x300_crop.jpg

It's worth noting that the first re-enactment of “Paris to Peking”, in 1997, took a southern route that – you guessed it –crossed the Tibetan plateau:

To prove the technological capability of these driverless “autonomous” vehicles, VisLab did the natural and obvious thing, for a European company: demonstrate that they can cross Eurasia.

2. Crossing Eurasia with an Overland Tour, Europe to Beijing

************************************

Now it's common knowledge that ever since the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the liberalization of China, overlanding tour companies have been offering “Silk Road” excursions that travel Europe to Beijing.

For instance, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silk_Road , http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/activityandadventure/9415478/Central-Asia-on-the-Silk-Road.html , http://www.forbes.com/sites/janetrodgers/2011/11/22/ride-the-silk-road-in-a-hi-tech-caravan/ , http://www.overland-adventures.com/site_pro/SRindex.html , http://www.overland-adventures.com/site_pro/pdf/SR Magazine_sm.pdf , http://www.oasisoverland.co.uk/blog/2012/02/21/london-to-mongolia-along-the-ancient-silk-road/ , http://www.oasisoverland.co.uk/trip...12/LONDON-to-BEIJING-17-weeks-Trans-Asia.html , http://www.oasisoverland.co.uk/gallery_photos/maps/map_212.jpg , http://www.oasisoverland.co.uk/trip...-15-weeks-Turkey,-Iran,-The--Stans-China.html , http://www.oasisoverland.co.uk/gallery_photos/maps/map_147.jpg , http://www.odysseyoverland.co.uk/beijing.htm , http://www.odysseyoverland.co.uk/beijing-route_east.htm , http://www.dragoman.com/holidays/details/silk-route-between-istanbul-and-beijing , http://www.dragoman.com/holidays/itinerary/silk-route-between-istanbul-and-beijing , http://peregrinemag.com/tours/drive-silk-road-2014-zurich-hong-kong/ , and http://asiamountains.net/en/catalog...-the-silk-road-from-zurich-to-hong-kong-2014/ :

Silk Trail Overland .jpg eub.jpg beijing.jpg
map_212.jpg map_index.jpg

These trips have also become more feasible perhaps because much of the ancient Silk Road in China is now a modern expressway:

************************************

3. Crossing the Tibetan Plateau with an Overland Tour, Istanbul to Kathmandu

************************************

But perhaps less well-known is that many overlanding companies now offer “Istanbul to Kathmandu” excursions that cross the Tibetan plateau.

Basically these are variations of their Silk-Road tours that turn right at the Taklamakan desert:

est-thumb.jpg kathmandu.jpg

See for instance http://www.dragoman.com/holidays/details/silk-route-between-kathmandu-and-istanbul , http://www.dragoman.com/holidays/itinerary/silk-route-between-kathmandu-and-istanbul , http://www.odysseyoverland.co.uk/kathmandu.htm , and http://www.odysseyoverland.co.uk/kathmandu-route.htm .

But what about self-drive? Surely self-driving the Tibetan plateau is still impossible?

It's complicated, but not impossible, and some Chinese companies are now trying to make things easier. For instance, “China Exploration.com” claims that it will obtain all government documents, meet you at the border, and give you a Chinese driver's license and license plate – see http://www.chinaexploration.com/Overland/Silk-road-Tibet-Self-Driving-Tour.html . I can't vouch for it, but it's interesting that such companies have emerged. Also see http://asiamountains.net/en/catalog/overland-expeditions/self-drivingtrips-in-china/ , http://www.cits.net/china-tours/special-interest/self-drive-tours/p068.html , and http://www.china-driving.com/en/itineraries/driving/ ; and see the website for self-driving the Silk Road in general, including countries outside China, at http://www.driverabroad.com/classic-road-trips/driving-the-silk-road/ . For driving across Tibet coming up from India specifically, see the useful and relatively recent website that describes how to do it, obtain permits, etc., at http://www.mygola.com/india-to-germany-roadtrip-border-crossings-and-routes/q21937 . And for a really wild description of crossing the Tibetan plateau by bicycle, filled with good photographs, see http://englandtoindia.blogspot.it/2013/12/the-tibet-diaries-part-2-crossing-high.html .

In short, crossing central Eurasia has always figured strongly in European automotive imagination, and crossing the Tibetan plateau has been a subsidiary objective within that aspiration. To emphasize the point, what follows below are descriptions of two more epic trips that crossed the Tibetan plateau, with Landrovers.

The first, conducted by Landrover-Germany in 2013, is called the "Silk Road Tour", while the second, conducted by Landrover-Britain also in 2013, is best referred to as the "Silk Trail" Hybrid expedition. Yes, they both occurred in 2013, both crossed the Tibetan plateau, and both were very ambitious "big" expeditions. But they had different objectives, used different classes of vehicle, and crossed the plateau in different ways.

4. Landrover-Germany's "Silk Road Tour", 2013, Berlin to Mumbai

************************************

First off, it should be mentioned that Landrover’s German subsidiary runs overlanding tours similar to "Mercedes Benz Offroad", as already described in “High Altitude Heating", posts #43 - #45, at http://www.expeditionportal.com/for...BEST-High-Altitude-Solution-for-Heating/page5 (standard ExPo pagination).

5.
"Landrover Experience" versus "Mercedes Benz Offroad"

************************************

The format of this Landrover trip across Central Asia and Tibet, in 2013, was substantially different from the Mercedes Benz Offroad trips that took place in 2011 and 2012, and that also crossed Tibet, as previously discussed in the “High Altitude Heating” thread - see http://www.expeditionportal.com/for...BEST-High-Altitude-Solution-for-Heating/page5 , posts #43 - #45.

First off, the Landrover "Silk Road Tour" travelled all the way to Mumbai, whereas the Mercedes trips finished in Kolkata. Second the Landrover trip seems to have travelled in both directions, there and back, although the “Landrover Experience” website seems to suggest that only the return journey, Mumbai back to Germany, was open to paying customers – see http://translate.googleusercontent....e.html&usg=ALkJrhgzX2yRIfFmeldAtFL7lkjqozHF1Q . Third, Landrover provided the vehicles, whereas the Mercedes trips described in “High Altitude Heating” had participants use their own G-wagens. Fourth, on Mercedes trips the participants drove the whole length, whereas on this Landrover trip paying participants bought particular “stages” or segments.

But not all segments were available to paying participants. Unlike the Mercedes trips, on the Landrover "Silk Road Tour" it seems that the trip-segment that crossed the Tibetan plateau was available only to Landrover's “Teilnehmers”, and other non-paying participants who had specific functions – see http://translate.googleusercontent....e.html&usg=ALkJrhgzX2yRIfFmeldAtFL7lkjqozHF1Q .

What is a “Teilnehmer”?

Google translates “Teilnehmer” as “participant”. But in German the word also suggests someone who takes responsibility (“nehmen”), for a portion of something (“Teil”). So “Teilnehmers” are those selected by Landrover from the general public to volunteer as drivers for specific portions of their trips.

Landrover-Germany ran a national competition in 2012, in which 60 finalists, chosen from over 30,000 applicants, competed for 12 spots enabling them to participate in the "Silk Road Tour" the following year for free, as “Teilnehmers” – see http://www.landrover-experience-tour.de/seidenstrasse2013.html , http://translate.google.co.uk/trans...ver-experience-tour.de/seidenstrasse2013.html , http://translate.googleusercontent....r.html&usg=ALkJrhhBgb14xEuNrHOQA8ecAFtYhq74XQ , http://translate.googleusercontent....n.html&usg=ALkJrhibhiExV06z5I1Jhq6KjhLEYQhIZg , and http://www.autobild.de/artikel/anzeige-2891361.html , http://translate.google.co.uk/trans.../www.autobild.de/artikel/anzeige-2891361.html , http://www.auto-motor-und-sport.de/...our-2013-reise-zum-dach-der-welt-7721082.html , http://translate.google.co.uk/trans...our-2013-reise-zum-dach-der-welt-7721082.html .

Landrover-Germany has done the same for many previous “Experience” overlanding excursions, in exotic locations around the world. The competition process to become a Landrover Experience “Teilnehmer” is now something of a German institution, at least in automotive circles – see http://www.landrover.com/de/de/lr/about-land-rover/land-rover-news/lr-experience-tour-2015/ , http://translate.google.co.uk/trans...rover/land-rover-news/lr-experience-tour-2015 , http://newsroom.jaguarlandrover.com/de-de/land-rover/neuigkeiten/2013/04/let_endquali/ , http://translate.google.co.uk/trans.../land-rover/neuigkeiten/2013/04/let_endquali/ , http://de.autoblog.com/2014/03/07/teilnehmer-gesucht-land-rover-experience-in-australien , http://translate.google.co.uk/trans...r-gesucht-land-rover-experience-in-australien , http://de.auto.de/magazin/showArtic...er-der-Land-Rover-Experience-Tour-stehen-fest , http://translate.google.co.uk/trans...er-der-Land-Rover-Experience-Tour-stehen-fest , http://www.classicdriver.com/de/art...ience-tour-2015-australien-abenteurer-gesucht , http://www.presseportal.de/pm/23205...land-rover-experience-tour-2013-ist-unterwegs , and http://translate.google.co.uk/trans...land-rover-experience-tour-2013-ist-unterwegs :

One positive consequence of this selection process is that the age-spectrum on Landrover's "Silk Road Tour" seems much wider than the age-spectrum suggested by the photograph of the Mercedes 2011 trip's paying participants, previously posted in the “High Altitude Heating” thread, at http://www.expeditionportal.com/for...BEST-High-Altitude-Solution-for-Heating/page5 , post #45:

Merc-driving-event.jpg

On the Landrover "Silk Road Tour" in 2013 the “Teilnehmers” were all under age 50, and quite a few were under 30. Whereas the participants on the Mercedes trips that crossed Tibet in 2011 and 2012 seem like well-off elderly folks, of the kind who can afford the hefty price-tag.....:bigbossHL:

The following is a collection of videos that documents various Landrover Experience "Teilnehmer" trips that have taken place over the last 10 years, around the world. Notice how in most of them many participants are quite young. Also note that the narration for the Malaysia trip in particular, which took place in 2008, is in English. But like all of the other Landrover Experience "Teilnehmer" trips, this is a German excursion, with German participants:

Now even when compared to this extraordinary back-catalog of previous "Landrover Experience" trips, the "Silk Road Tour" in 2013 stands out as something special, as a "super-trip" intended to mark the 10th anniversary of Landrover Experience.

It should also be noted that these "Teilnehmer" trips seem a bit different from the more standard, fee-paying excursions that Landrover-Germany offers. Again, see http://www.landrover-experience.de/reisen.html , http://translate.google.co.uk/trans...ttp://www.landrover-experience.de/reisen.html , http://translate.googleusercontent....s.html&usg=ALkJrhhFE7SNQlcpOswZW722DGe7RDAYLA , http://translate.googleusercontent....a.html&usg=ALkJrhicvMBH_Y7-CRYM4FYga-iH-UVFzg , http://translate.googleusercontent....a.html&usg=ALkJrhiQ8UexbGOF_6smhl30QYf_8jdBCQ , http://translate.googleusercontent....d.html&usg=ALkJrhi3Z_9uilBp2N9hh0a6T8a3REM6ag , http://translate.googleusercontent....o.html&usg=ALkJrhgraygtGmHWSPZJfT7nFX8EdtZW8Q , http://translate.googleusercontent....e.html&usg=ALkJrhhjTa2EQa-Y3O0W2Zv8R52sxSWP2g , and http://translate.googleusercontent....d.html&usg=ALkJrhiCNH-lkeLu5mX4NhXsSva10d7UYw , etc. etc.

These "Teilnehmer" trips seem to be a special category of PR trip, whose purpose is to drum up publicity for Landrover and its products.

6. Landrover-Germany's "Silk Road Tour", 2013: Professional Photography

************************************

Professional photographers and journalists also participated on the Landrover-Germany "Silk Road Tour", including the Tibetan segment, which is perhaps the reason why good photographs of the trip are so abundant.

The trip blog of the "Silk Road Tour" is well-organized, articulate, and packed with breathtaking photographs, less than 15 % of which I posted above – see https://active.touch-landrover.de/lifestyle/channels/217 , https://active.touch-landrover.de/lifestyle/categories/43/stories/63 , https://active.touch-landrover.de/lifestyle/categories/43/stories/69 , https://active.touch-landrover.de/lifestyle/categories/43/stories/79 , https://active.touch-landrover.de/lifestyle/stories/271 , https://active.touch-landrover.de/lifestyle/stories/273 , and https://active.touch-landrover.de/lifestyle/stories/275 .

And here of some photographs of the "Silk Road Tour" in Kathmandu, where the drivers changed over, and those on the China/Tibet segment flew home. But not before taking one last sightseeing trip of Mount Everest, with "Buddha Air":

7. Landrover-Germany's "Silk Road Tour", 2013: Professional Video

************************************

Here are some videos of the "Silk Road Tour", but for better or worse, the narration is exclusively in German.

The first three videos are long, but excellent and professionally produced, and cover the entire journey in sequence. The second video on the right covers the crossing of Tibet in the second half, with spectacular footage of Tibet’s vast spaces, and Tibet’s typically good, paved roads. And yes, some participants do come down with “Höhenkrankheit”, i.e. altitude sickness:

If you understand German, it's a bit amusing to see this expedition getting severely stressed out when crossing the chaotic, inefficient border between China and Nepal, at the so-called "Friendship Bridge" between the two countries. One of them complains that the China/Nepal border crossing is by far the most challenging and frustrating moment of the entire trip!

As many suggest on ExPo, often the biggest barriers one encounters when overlanding are not bad roads or impossible terrain, but rather, the political constructs called national borders. A certain amount of consternation in the face of these political constructs is understandable, given that under the Schengen agreement, continental Europe is now blessedly "border-free", free of customs officers officiously holding things up at border crossings. But it's also interesting to watch these Germans freak out as they seem to experience Third World chaos and inefficiency for the first time. Nepal and India are always quite a shock for Germans habituated to the order, rationality, and clockwork precision of the Bundesrepublik. Note that they did not seem to encounter much chaos and inefficiency prior to Nepal, perhaps because up to that point they were crossing countries that are best classified as "Second World" or "middle-income", and not Third World.

The next two videos are comparatively short overviews of the entire trip:

The following are videos of the “Vortour”, i.e. the preparatory Pre-Tour, conducted with two vehicles that drove Frankfurt to Mumbai earlier in the year:

And here is a more personal video, shot by Sebastian Schaal, who joined the "Silk Road Tour" in Odessa -- see https://active.touch-landrover.de/lifestyle/categories/43/stories/175 , http://translate.google.co.uk/trans...drover.de/lifestyle/categories/43/stories/175 , http://www.handelsblatt.com/auto/te...our-2013-reise-zum-dach-der-welt/8820708.html , and http://translate.google.co.uk/trans...our-2013-reise-zum-dach-der-welt/8820708.html :

Finally, it's worth remembering that these arcadian photographs and videos of happy overlanding across Central Asia and the Tibetan plateau belie the fact that Tibet is an occupied country, and that Chinese repression of Tibet's people is ongoing and brutal:

Now Landrover-Germany's trip across central Asia and Tibet does seem like a bit of a publicity stunt, a “one-off” designed in part to showcase the latest (2013) Landrover “Evoque” model. As such, perhaps it's of less interest to serious overlanders than the Mercedes G-wagen trips described in the "High Altitude Heating" thread, at http://www.expeditionportal.com/for...BEST-High-Altitude-Solution-for-Heating/page5 (standard ExPo pagination), posts #43 - #45:

Range_Rover_Evoque_Seidenstraße_Heck.jpg Range_Rover_Evoque_Seidenstraße_Front.jpg

There's something more appealing about being able to travel with one's own G-wagen, perhaps fitted with a small camper and pop-up roof in back. And personally I'd want to travel the whole distance from Germany to India, as opposed to just driving someone else's Landrover, for a segment of a publicity stunt. But the G-wagen trips offered by Mecedes Benz Offroad are not cheap, and indeed just owning a G-wagen is not an inexpensive proposition.

Even still, all of this suggests that crossing the Tibetan plateau has become a geographic “objective” for more than a few European overland trips. And it demonstrates the main point: that Tibet figures strongly in European “automotive imagination”, in a way that perhaps it does not figure in contemporary American "automotive imagination"? When the PR team at Landrover Germany brainstormed ways to market the new “Evoque” model, it was natural enough for them to imagine a PR trip that crosses the Tibetan plateau. Are PR teams working for American SUV manufacturers ever likely do the same?

Sure, these Mercedes and Landrover trips are German trips, but that does not make them any less real, or the Tibetan plateau any less important -- for European overlanders.

Currently Landrover-Britain seems to offer adventure travel primarily via Abercrombie & Kent – see http://www.abercrombiekent.co.uk/landrover/ , http://www.landrover.com/gb/en/lr/a...r-news/abercrombie-and-kent-adventure-travel/ , http://newsroom.jaguarlandrover.com/en-gb/land-rover/images?ipid=86889&altTemplate=Image Pack , and http://www.europe.tata.com/Section/...-present-adventure-travel?sectid=Q753bw1G5ro= . But the range of trips offered in any given year seems somewhat limited, at least in comparison to the range of trips offered by Landrover-Germany. See http://www.abercrombiekent.co.uk/landrover/loader.cfm?csModule=security/getfile&pageid=765616 , and compare to http://www.landrover-experience.de/reisen.html , http://translate.google.co.uk/trans...ttp://www.landrover-experience.de/reisen.html , http://www.landrover.com/de/de/lr/experience-land-rover/experience-land-rover/land-rover-experience/ , and http://translate.google.co.uk/trans.../experience-land-rover/land-rover-experience/ . Market dynamics are probably at work here, because English-language-speaking overland and safari tour companies are abundant worldwide, almost a dime a dozen. Whereas finding one that speaks German, and that provides German-speaking guides, is another matter. So perhaps the German-language market niche for 4x4 adventure tours is occupied by Landrover-Germany and Mercedes Benz Offroad simply because there is not much competition?

However, it's worth noting that Landrover-Britain/Abercrombie & Kent are currently developing an off-road excursion for China, in 2015, one that will include – you guessed it – the Tibetan plateau:

2015 JOURNEYS

We're currently developing a passageoff-road through the verdant peaksand valleys of the Yunnan province. Our itinerary will involve an insightinto China's traditional heartland, witnessing rural Chinese life againstone of the Orient's most iconicbackdrops: the majestic YangtzeRiver and the famous rice terraces ofHonghe Hani. Our experience willinvolve driving the winding roadsand off-road tracks of this remoteand diverse landscape, exploringhistoric towns and venturing intothe Tibetan plateau. We'll also havetime to explore the imperial wonderof Beijing and test your driving skillsfurther at the Land Rover ExperienceCentre near Shanghai.
