EGR Cooler - 2010

My dream now is to level it, and figure out how to get a shortbed on it. I need to shorten the bed and frame about 16". Then move the axle forward and shorten the driveshaft. anyone ever done that?

Great looking truck. I'd love to have a CC LB of some sort myself too.

But, before you get too far down the road, wouldn't a diesel Excursion, with 137" wheelbase (37" shorter than a 174" wheelbase CC LB) and seating for 7 (given that you're expecting your 4th child) make more sense for you?

it did, but i could not find any that were in good shape. everything was completely trashed. i decided on the truck so we could pull a camper, and explore. if it gets to be to much of a pain, i know i can sell it. its in great shape.

I feel your pain on the EGR and Oil cooler. I had an 06 F250 CC short bed and loved it. I never had to actually any major work to my truck although it always loomed like a dark cloud in the back of my mind. It was stock when I sold it. Even so I monitored everything with a Scangauge II which did allow me address a failing FICM before it left me stranded.

The Powerstroke forum is fantastic resource. You're probably already a member. Just remember to not drink too much of their cool-aid over there. In the end, for me the "potential" cost and "potential" to be left stranded was too much. I got out of the F250 and bought a new F150 CC FX4. Much better fit for me.

Good luck with your truck.

well, finally got around to doing something to it. There is an o-ring between the water pump and the intake manifold to cool the EGR or something. Not sure what. So i decided to tear into last friday after work. It wasn't terribly hard, other then all the wiring and the fact its 5' off the ground or more.

While I was in there, I noticed someone replaced the stock EGR cooler with a new Bullet Proof cooler. So I decided to just put in new intake manifold gaskets o-rings. about 6 hours later, its running leak free.

So far I'm averaging about 16.5mpg all around. Not to bad. My last range Rover usually got 12.5 mpg and my Toyota Sequoia got 14.

Well, I finally got to get out in my Truck for a bit of exploring. We went up Logan Canyon and found a road that lead to Ephraim's Grave. Its the site where some dude from Malad Idaho shot a 1100 LBS grizzly bear. The bear was know to have a sweet tooth for cattle and sheep. It was pretty cool. We went up Saturday and even got a little snow fall. I slid off a pretty hard trail and almost took out the right side of my vehicle. I realized later my hubs were in Auto instead of Lock. no wonder I had some much trouble getting over little rocks and roots. I tore up my tires pretty good. Not that there was much left. So, I'll look for some new ones or get some Treadwrights again like I used on my Range Rover. Anyway some pictures.

The baby next to the grizzly bear grave. The stone standing up on the base, represents how big the bear was. I guess it was the last grizzly in Utah

I had to pull off the trail / road to let some ATV's bye.

Shortly after this picture we slid off the trail. Its an old ATT microwave tower. It doesn't look to be in use anymore.

I didn't take any pictures, I was a bit panicked because the truck would not go the direction I pointed it. After a bit of rocking and slow backing we got it back on the trail. Next time, I'll make sure the hubs are actually in Lock. Its an old ATT microwave tower. It doesn't look to be in use anymore.

So I have not updated in awhile. I bought a Land Rover Discovery and spend a couple of months working on it so I could fit on smaller trails.

I was having hot start issues and had oil leaking all over my driveway.

Anyway

I finally fixed it all, and did a bunch of what I thought, might as well do since I'm in there. It took me a couple weeks of work. I was working on it after work.

So I replaced the following:

1 Injector (the plug broke so I had no choice) $249
Stand Pipes $49
Dummy Plugs $49
Oil Cooler Kit with EGR Cooler $250
EGR Cooler (bullet proof version)
STC fitting on HPOP $49
Coolant Reservoir By-Pass Hose $89
8 gallons of Peak Final Charge Antifreeze $120
4 Gallons of 10w30 Semi Synthetic Rotella T6 / Filter $120
Two hours at a shop $196

Grand Total $1171

Going back together

So, after all that, I finally got it all together other then the turbo pipes. I couldn't get them lined up, so I took it to a shop. They charged me 2 hours of work to line everything up and get the air out of the system.

So far, it starts if its hot or cold. My mileage went up 3 mpg. It runs good.

Apparently I have a large turbo on it. Not sure what brand. It might explain why it has no trouble pulling 10K lbs up a mountain pass without slowing down.

Next up is to get an STC tuner for it. Then hopefully work on the exhaust system.

All in all it wasn't horribly hard to work on. I had a lot of anxiety about doing it. I've never really torn down a diesel. But there were a lot of videos about it, and I did it all without a manual. Scary, but if you pay attention when taking stuff apart, its not so bad going back together. My oil scary issue was the oil filter / oil cooler housing. I had to make sure 3 times, I put all the little trap doors back in the right place with the right o-rings.

I originally to it to a shop who said they could air test it for me. The called me up 30 minutes later and told me it was my HPOP. and for $1800 they could replace it for me.

I told them the HPOP rarely if ever goes out on the newer 6.0's. That Most likely it was the STC fitting, dummy plugs and standpipes. They told me I was completely wrong and didn't know what I was talking about. To which I replied, you never did an air pressure test. I can tell you didn't remove the sensor. Kiss my ********.

So I saved my self a lot of money and upgraded a lot of stuff while fixing the STC fitting and oil leaks.

I think I should be in good shape for another 100K miles. By that time maybe the value will come back into that truck.

My future plans are to get rid of the cat, get a straight through muffler and dump the fumes before the rear axle.
