Samsung has announced an update to its least expensive tablet, now called the Galaxy Tab 4. Basic specs include
1.2 GHz quad-core CPU, 1280 x 800 pixel display, 1.5GB of RAM, Android 4.4 KitKat software, microSD card slot, 3MP rear camera, 1.3MP front-facing camera, 802.11n WiFi, and Bluetooth 4.0. GPS and GLONASS support are included for navigation.

The Tab 4 will be available in three screen sizes: 7, 8 and 10 inches, measured diagonally. The base 7 inch model with 8GB Flash memory will initially cost $200, up $30 from the price of the current Tab 3. A better deal may be the 8 inch model, which increases memory to 16 GB and ups battery capacity by 10%, for $270. the 10 inch Tab 4 starts at $350.

Compared to the Tab 3, the new tablets have faster processors with quad rather than dual cores, and higher resolution displays. No dimensions have been announced, but the new models are likely to be thinner and lighter than the Tab 3.

The above prices are for models with WiFi only. Samsung plans to offer Tab 4 models with 4G LTE cellular data capability as well. No prices for the 4G models have been announced.

the Galaxy Tab 4 will ship on May 1. Preorders will be accepted at many electronics stores starting April 24.

Samsung also has a Galaxy Tab Pro line, with faster processors and very high resolution displays, in 8.4 inch and 10.2 inch screen sizes. They're priced about $100 more than the Tab 4 models. These maybe overkill for an in-car navi system.

Even more expensive is the Galaxy Note line, which includes a digitizer and stylus for on-screen input. The stylus is useful only in a handful of Samsung-provided applications.

I think I'd stick with the basic Tab 4 model, maybe with 4G.

Samsung is not content to offer the standard Galaxy Tab, Galaxy Tab Pro and Galaxy Note Pro with stylus. Now they've introduced the Galaxy Tab S.

The Galaxy Tab S is different from previous Samsung models in the use of an AMOLED display. Samsung uses AMOLED for its top of the line smart phone displays. Advantages include deeper blacks, more vibrant colors, and improved contrast. Some people report better visibility in direct sunlight, too.

Price for the Tab S with 8.4 inch screen with 2560x1600 pixels starts at $399. The tablet weighs 10.3 oz, and measures a mere 6.6 mm / 0.26 inches thick. There's still enough space for a battery rated to last 11 hours. This is a WiFi only tablet, with GPS/GLONASS navigation included. OS is Android 4.4.2, with Samsung interface and extra software. Samsung Octa processor, 3GB RAM, 16 GB flash storage, and support for MicroSD cards up to 128 GB. Samsung's fingerprint reader introduced with the Galaxy S5 smart phone is included.

The Tab S, in 8.4 inch and 10.5 inch screen sizes, will be available in July. Models with 4G LTE data service will be offered in the future.

Given Samsung's past behavior, it's only a matter of time before we see a Tab S Pro and a Tab S Note.
