custom camper, 1992 dodge 4X4 W250 diesel with fiberglass utility body and rare 1972 ford american road camper cabover, all fiberglass.
started with an original dodge w250, upgraded rear axle to a dana 80 dually with limited slip out of a newer dodge 1 ton and matching 1 ton front hubs, 3.54 ratio for comfortable cruise at 75 mph.
Upgraded to larger 1 ton gm rear master cylinders , Stock truck bed was removed and installed a fiberglass utility bed for extra storage for camping gear, tools,etc...
Two rear leaf springs were added on each side with rear adjustable firestone air bags to carry extra weight and ride comfort . Between the bed and cabover sits a 100 gallon industrial water bladder bringing total capacity to 130 gallons. Extra tank / bladder has a 12V shurflow pump to transfer water into primary tank or operate as an external shower / washdown.
The frame now carries two full size spares ( 265/75-16 ) under the cabover. tons of storage inside and out.
Rear brakes have 4000 miles, front brake are new.
trailer electric brake controller.
The original 9 gallon black water waste tank was replaced with a 30 gallon fiberglass tank in addition to the stock 23 gallon gray water tank.
A propane on demand water heater in the utility replaced the original rv style gas guzzler water heater for instantaneous hot water without having to keep a pilot or heater on.
Two stock 20lbs propane tanks will keep the fridge going for 3 week on remote locations.
Corean counter tops, new upholstery, new on demand waterpump and all new high quality fixtures.
Bathroom has shower and new, full height house style porcelain bowl toilet .
The truck has 127,000 original miles, injection pump has 3200 rpm governor spring and fuel screw turned out moderately. 4" exhaust all the way out and replaced the dodge 4 speed automatic with a dodge / mercedes G56 6speed manual transmission. clutch / flywheel and pressure plate were installed brand new 4000 miles ago
Turbo housing was replaced with a 16cm housing for better low end boost and response. up front is a 12,000lbs winch.
oversized norcold rv refrigerator ( twice the cu ft of the original unit ) that runs great on propane (or electric ) and booster fan for hot weather to help the refrigerator coils stay cool Roof a/c is original and works fine. all inside lights are LED,.
Transfer case ( np 205, the strongest transfer case ever built ) and transmission are mounted on polyurethane bushings. single 40W solar panel on roof keeps unit charged at all times.
the full sized bed has a memory foam mattress for a great nights sleep.
A brand new R134 a/c compressor was installed on truck to replace aging R-12 unit.
On board Viair air compressor with 10 gallon tank. front and rear sway bars, onboard converter / battery charger.
this truck has seen hundreds of miles of dirt roads in baja AND NEVER LET US DOWN.
the only flaw on the truck is a dent on the drivers door panel and a crack in the windshield, NO rust anywhere above or bellow
I have seen ford American road campers advertised for as high as $12,000 for the cabover alone due to their rarity, these were sold thru ford dealerships during 1971 and 1972.
a little bit of elbow grease, some paint and a few details would make this one of a kind camping / excursion rig a true eye catcher.
Presently, under the slightly blemished exterior is a mechanically perfect and bullet proof machine that is ready to take on any challenge one might envision.
