We havn't had the opportunity to use the camper in a while. Just regular life getting occupied with lots of stuff. I have actually been driving the truck regularly because my daily driver decided to basically self-destruct. Well since I right now totally rely on the truck to get me places I proceeded with some more maintenance.

As you can tell the serpentine belt was way overdue.
Got the new one on with a little bit of hassle. Mostly due to sub zero temperatures, cold hands and a new tight belt.

This weekend we made a little get away. Tried out a some mountainbiking just a short drive from home.

But yet again, very pleased with the well insulated camper. And preparing breakfast inside is doable.

OH MAN!!!!! Post 66. That pic of skating on glassy lake ice!! bout made me cry. Man I miss winter.... Stupid California. So cranking hot. Nice average joe build. I like it. No need for million dollar composites and glues. Well done!
How is the weather in California now?
Yesterday we got a blizzard warning with a predicted forcast of 15 inches of snow.

Turned out to be 5-6 inches which turned to slush. Totally useless. I myself could go for som Cali-sun right now. This time of year is not the pride and glory of the latitude where I'm living.

It lasted for a couple of hours! Now it's back to snow storm mode. Got to use 4wd today driving over a mountainpass. Didn't snow crazy much but the winds made it a little bit interesting. A semi came drifting around a bend but I had a couple of inches on my side to squeeze by.

It's not dumping by any means but as every year it's total chaos further south. The first snow hit the capitol and as always it's a ******tshow to the amusement of us living in the countryside.

Took advantage of an incredibly boring turn of the weather. We are now seeing warmer degrees and rain. Since it's not freezing anymore I whased the summer wheels. While at it I decided to take some measurements. I know that 2 of the tires are more worn than the other 2.

From what I understand the best way to eliminate any error sources while comparing circumference is to deflate the tires entirely. But I settled for having the same pressure in all four.

The good pair has 8 mm (3.15 inch) in the center. And the circumference is 2492 and 2490 mm (2492/2.54= 98.11 inch).

The more worn pair has 3 mm tire depth. They are worn down in the center which leads me to believe they have been running with to much pressure. I recall noticing this when I bought it. I have tried to run whitin the specs but I guess damage where already done. The circumference where 2482 and 2480 mm (2480/2.54 = 97.64 inch)

Time for some math! Comparing the biggest to smallest tire.

Difference in circumference:
98.11/97.64 = 0.0048 = 0.48%
2492-2480 = 12 mm = 0.472 inch

Difference in treadwear:
8-3 = 5 mm (1.97 inch)
5/3 = 1.67 = 167 %

Difference in revs per mile:
(1 mile = 63360 inch)
63360/98.11 = 645.8
63360/97.64 = 648.9
648.9 - 645.8 = 3.1 aprox 3 revs per mile.

So is this a problem when driving in 4wd? I never ever drive in 4wd on paved roads. In summer when these tires are used the truck runs atleast 95 % of the time in 2wd. I would asume the size difference and the short time spend in 4wd on logging roads (gravel/mud/sand = some slippage) and in low speed adds no severe strain on the transfer case and differentials. The system should be able to handle some difference in turning speed, considering wheels will have different speed while driving through a regular bend on the road (different turning radius).

While it's not ideal I think the bad ones will live on a little bit next summer. I like to run the best pair in the rear so this makes wheel rotation limited. But I will definitely get new ones pretty soon cause I don't like the treadwear and the risk of hydroplaning (have that happen to me once and I like it to stay at that number). But my conclusion is that they will be changed out of traction issues rather than stress-on-the-drivetrain issues. Atleast my tires which are on the same axle are within 2 mm (0.079 inch) of each other.

But this is just my uneducated guess. I asume if I asked the tire dealer they would tell me that it's like driving around in an activated bomb playing russian roulette at the same time. But I don't sell tires, and they do...

Goodyear Duratracs do well in light snow and are a good All Terrain tire. They are not a substitute for studded winters or Hakkapeliitta's :D

You are right, 3 mm is pushing it a little. But I can wait atleast 5 months before I have to consider it again. Keeping myself on the road with finnish studs.

I wondered about where to have the best tires when I started driving a long time ago. I was told to have the best pair in the rear, no matter if its rwd, fwd, awd ord 4wd. Makes you skid forward if you loose traction up front compared to spin if you loose traction in the back. Well that's atleast what I'm told. But I have spun, skidded and hydroplaned off the road so I don't know. There are always two sides of a coin. As long as you drive what you are used to and stay on track I guess it's good. We can definitely agree on that good tires are youre only point of contact with the ground, so don't cheap out on them.

Well my daily driver seemes to be needing a new camshaft among other stuff. So it's been out of business for awhile. Hence been driving the truck regularly. But when does issues usually appear? At the most inconvenient time of course. The alternator on the truck gave up on me early in the morning driving to a job. I used to have a company car, but decided to start my own business. So I used to have a working DD, and now then I used to have a this truck as a last resort. Managed to get a hold of an alternator the next day and got at it after a 11 hour work day.

Ohh so that's how a new, bright and shiny engine component looks like! So they don't come covered in dirt and grime? It sure puts the rest of the engine compartment to shame.

Not just a looker, charges the depleted batteries like a champ.
Simple and easy job but if I where to decide, it could have happened another time.

Yeah never when you want them to break that's for sure. I changed an alternator on the side of the road a mile from my house once. That was frustrating. :) luckily I had stopped on my way home to get a new one cuz I knew it was going. Was hoping to make it home first though. You should just put more shiny parts on. 😃

Yeah I guess that's how it is with old trucks. They wan't that occasional shiny part thrown into them to be running.

Parked by this old 79 chevy tow truck this week.

It just screems "put a flatbed and camper on me".
But right now I have had enough trucks that don't run and not enough time. And I'm not looking for another project, I'd like to squeeze the most out of my current setup. But I guess that like most of You guys I'm always "building" stuff in my head.

Superfun to try out my new fatbike. We went xc skiing back home a couple of times. But then it got warmer. So the last two weekends we have driven 2.5 hour north to my parents cabin.

Skiing in the resort but just on groomers. No powder chasin' yet.
