Engineering to Animas Forks in SW Colorado-Still Snowy up High

We love our intrepid snowdozer guys in the San Juan Mountains. In fact we adore them!! These guys open many of our high Alpine Loop 4x4 roads/trails in the Ouray/Silverton/Lake City/Telluride, Colorado mountains every late spring/early summer every year. Wheeling through the deep single lane plowed drifts and snowbanks at 12,000+ feet is amazing. Some of these narrow snow lanes have up to 25/30 feet on either side early on. It's a whole different world than wheeling in the San Juan Mountains come July/August when most of the snow is melted, wildflowers are blooming, and most people arrive in the area. Lots of snow especially on the alpine north facing slopes which are still in winter mode even in June. Six jeeps (rover recovery trucks) and one rover wheeled up Mineral Creek off of Hy 550 south of Ouray all the way eastward to the 12,800' summit of scenic and famous Engineer Pass. Lots of downright cold wind at that elevation on Saturday June 14. After Engineer Pass instead of heading down eastwards toward Lake City we retreated a couple of miles on the way we came up to Engineer and headed southward to the interesting ghost mining town of 11,200' high Animas Forks. The grass was greening up there but just barely. Few flowers but we had a hungry Gray Jay (camp robbers) begging us for tidbits as we ate. We stopped for lunch at the popular ghost town building and then headed southward to Silverton, CO and then 60 miles northward over Red Mountain Pass and Hy 550 to the Montrose, CO area which has an elevation of 5,800' meaning we gained 7000' to get to Engineer Pass originally. Here's some pictures of which some are a bit speckled from being taken through my windshield. My oldest son (driving) and my wife were along with me.
#1-taken by Kaye Weaver in one of the jeeps ahead of us showing high snowfields at the top of the Mineral Creek trail.
#2,3,4-We are going around the last part of the Engineer Pass trail and are almost to the pass. Views look northward.
#5-Engineer Pass at 12,800' where we stopped to take pictures in the cold wind. High Uncompahgre Peak (highest San Juan Peak) at 14,308" is in the distance on the left.
#6-The deep dozed snowfield that led down the valley eastward just off of Engineer Pass. Leads to Lake City miles away to the east. We did not go down that way.
#7-Looking SW from Engineer Pass and the distant high peaks of the Sneffels Range.
#8-My wife hiking at the summit of Engineer Pass. The two distant high peaks in the center are The Wetterhorn (14,016') on the left and Uncompahgre Peak (14,308") on the right which are in the Uncompahgre Wilderness to the north.

More mountain views taken from the summit of Engineer Pass.
#1-Northward view of the 14er's named The Wetterhorn and Unconpahgre Peak in the Uncompahgre Wilderness.
#2,3-Looks westward down from Engineer Pass down the Bear Creek drainage system. The Sneffels Range is also in view to the left of center. Dead in the #2 distant center and right in #3 is the Uncompahgre Plateau which runs all the way northwestward to the Grand Junction, CO area.
#4-Lined up on Engineer Pass preparing to go to Animas Forks. The mountain on the left is Engineer Mountain at 13,218'.
#5-Self explanatory pass sign with the high Sneffels Range in the western distance.
#6-Telephoto of the distant high Sneffels Range to the west. Just right of center is the pointy tip of Mt. Sneffels (14,158'). The flat topped peak on the left is Potosi Peak (13,786').
#7-Just starting out from Engineer Pass to go to Animas Forks. One has to go up a couple of hundred feet to about 13,000' and then start dropping back down the zig zags to head to Animas Forks at 11,200'.
#8-Another view west and SW at the Bear River drainage and high peaks. Picture taken from 13,000' at the trail high point.

Nice photos! I am sooooo jealous. We were in Silverton about two weeks ago and were told that the pass to Lake City was too muddy. So we drove up to Animas Forks. When we got there the ranger laughed and said that he lived in Lake City and commuted the route every day. Sadly, we had, by this time, picked up a hitchhiker and had to take him back to Silverton, so we could not do the trail.

Next time!

Coming down the west side of Engineer pass (we came up this originally) and heading to Animas Forks to eat lunch. The trail was starting to get busy with ATV's, jeeps, and motorcycles coming up the narrow snow trail.
#1-Looking southward with Animas Forks being at the right of center where the distant evergreens are. About 1500' lower than where we are on the trail. You can't see it but above the last jeep in the snow filled cirque is an alpine lake named Horseshoe Lake. One can't drive to it or ever see it but it can be hiked to just off the trail down to Animas forks. In the high far distance is the Stony Pass area and 4x4 trail which is not open yet.
#2,3-Going Down off of Engineer Pass.
#4,5-Views to the west coming down off of Engineer Pass with #4 looking back at the tree filled Mineral Creek drainage that we originally came up along from Hy 550.
#6,7,8-The jeeps ahead of me as we head down the snow lined trail to Animas Forks.

Last photos. Animas Forks and lunch. Then we headed for home in the Montrose, CO area via Silverton, Ouray, and Ridgeway along Hy. 550. A sunny blue day when we started had morphed into a cloudy day with a few spits of rain. Typical mountain weather especially later in the summer when the monsoon starts.
#1-Heading down the last stretch into Animas Forks. The Cinnamon Pass 4x4 trail/road intersects about a half mile ahead of where I Took the picture. Cinnamon Pass and beyond leads eastward to the Lake City area.
#2-Animas Forks (11,200') in the lower distance. A very popular and scenic spot.
#3,4-Mines and houses in the ghost town.
#5,6-A Gray Jay begging scraps from us at Animas Forks. These camp robbers can be amazingly tame at times.
#7-South of us at Animas Forks lies a 4x4 trail leading part way up into Burns Gulch and old mines. The trail is at the lower center in the distance. Burns Gulch is ringed by high 13er's on 3 sides.
#8-An old mining structure at Animas Forks (11,200'). Burns Gulch lies at the extreme right to the south.

Roverrock wonderful pictures. You make me jealous. As I look at these pictures I start to think if I have enough free time this summer to make it back over there. It has been three of four years now since we drove engineer pass.
