We are selling our 1989 Syncro 4x4 "Joker" model factory hightop, with factory Westfalia interior. Unmolested and truly like new...we have seriously had people sit in it and say...."Is this new?!"

$55,000 OBO
Located in Kimberley, BC
122,065 kilometers (75,848 miles)

This is a unique camper built on the stronger 16" Syncro platform. Regular Syncro 4x4's are based on a 14" tire.

The 16" Syncro Vanagon was Volkswagen's entry into the 4x4 military vehicle market. Most were built and sold to the military or the construction business. Very few were built into campers, and of those even fewer were made into hightops. We've heard as few as six and at most ten.

These vans have the heavier axles/CV joints and brakes from the much larger LT series of vans/trucks. There is also reinforcement of key areas of the body and shock towers. All in all, these improvements make for a very sturdy expedition camper.

This is a completely factory equipped camper, including the rare spare wheel carrier. The full-time standing headroom is awesome. And you can sleep four people...two upstairs in the hightop and two downstairs. Some VW hightop conversions have minimal room in the upper bunk, suitable only for storage or children, but this one sleeps two adults.

It includes a gas powered night heater w/timer, factory trailer hitch, awning, double pane insulated windows, complete set of seat covers, the rare ISRI front seats, front and rear differential lockers. The engine is the gasoline DJ 112hp version of the waterboxer and pulls the big van really well. There is a complete set (five) of newer BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A tires installed.

Everything on the van is stock with a few exceptions: The van, imported from Europe, came with 220 volt charging system which has been replaced with 110v. The fridge was also 220v, but we're including a 110v fridge from a 1990 Westy. You can install the 110v into the van or use an electric Engel or ARB type fridge/freezer instead (that's what we use). The space where the fridge went makes for great extra storage.

The truck style mirrors were added for much better visibility! (originals included). There is a new Sony CD/MP3 player in place of the original radio (included) and four new speakers. Also included are many spare parts.

The van was imported into Canada from Ireland where it had been in storage for a few years. The van was originally purchased by a German couple who wanted a rugged camper for a retirement trip to the Indian subcontinent and Nepal. This van was featured in the British VW camping magazine Camper&Bus (October 2012 issue) and is quite special.

The van is currently licensed and road legal in Canada and as of May 12th was exactly 25 years old, so would be fairly easy to import into the USA.

Please contact me with any questions or requests for additional photos.

We are very sad to have to sell this rig, but three Syncros is just too many! Going to concentrate on our other uber-rare European vehicle, a Syncro TriStar/Doka.

GoWesty's are going for $75k-$125k, and a few high tops have been posted here this last year, all about that price range, so, I figure the seller knows his market.

Good luck with the sale.

The Expo game is as much a hobby than anything else. And in our hobbies we get things, modify things, and play with things that may not always make sense to others. Unique and cool have great value in the hobby business, be it stamps, coins, watches or Expo Vehicles.

Somebody who is keen on Syncros is going to get this and be as happy as a pig-in-poo.

I agree with the last post. To the right buyer this rare unicorn of a rig could be worth far more money...so at $58k I think it's a steal if this is what you are looking for. Nice to see the trolls out slamming the sellers thread though (insert sarcasm here). Stick to your guns Canadark! You have a beautiful rig here and it's worth every penny. GLWS

I appreciate the positive comments. Yes, it's a niche vehicle and requires the right buyer. As of this evening, I have a firm offer in the high $40's, so my asking price (and it is an asking price) was not too far off the mark.

Entertaining other serious offers, though. Thanks for looking and travel safe!

The standing height is about 104". Upper bunk measures 75" long by 46" wide....just about the size of a full-size bed. There is 21" of clearance in the upper bunk and it has its own screened vent for nighttime ventilation.

Park it down on Rotary near the bocce pits this weekend. There's lots of oil money in town for J-Fest. You may find a buyer.
