Swarovski makes an adapter for recent iPhone models.

the adapter also fits several Swarovski binoculars

MeOpta makes a similar adapter. You have to measure your scope eyepiece to choose the right size adapter.

here's an article that says using the IPhone's burst mode is great for capturing a photo, and slow motion mode is very useful for video of active species like warblers.

makes me want to drag out my old Kowa TSN 3 scope with fluorite objective...

Hope this doesn't come off as negative, but what is this used for and what is the point of this?

An iPhone sensor is so small, why would you use it instead of a DSLR?

It's a hobby pursued by bird watchers who want a better look, and a permanent record. Many avid birders own a spotting scope, and most everyone has a smartphone. The adapter puts the two together.

DSLRs are fine, and work in this application. However, the DSLR is much heavier, making a stronger tripod a necessity to reduce vibration. And the expensive DSLRs have a sensor that is bigger than the circle of light coming out of the scope's eyepiece. So your photos come out with a black circle around them. That said, lots of people use DSLRs for digi-scoping.

If you're working for National Geographic, you'd use different (and vastly more expensive) gear.
