Truck Camper Shell questions

New here but been sucking the site up since finding it. I got here chasing the 4x4 Van idea, but then funding became an issue. I have a cap/shell on my Chevy 2500 CCSB D/A 2007 Classic. It came off a previous generation Chevy truck and fits OK. So I have been digging thru the showoff your cap mods thread and getting lots of ideas and thinking no need for the van b/c there are great ways to use the platform I have.

I am at the point now of deciding whether or not I add a ladder rack to my current setup with minor fitment issues, or punt and get a ladder racked contractor cap with a barn door rear and no tailgate. The contractor cap is AL and has Steel boxes and has the side tool storage but it cuts into the living space. So I would ask what you guys feel is a more secure setup, but also which would be more comfortable. The primary mission would be to sleep myself and one or two dogs while out hunting or testing for up to a weekend, but needs to be secure yet ventilated if I leave the dogs during the day for any reasons.

I am asking those who have done it b/c I want to be cost effective, thus no hotels. Fundamentally I am not opposed to do either at this point and I have located both the ladder rack and contractor cap locally on CL. I want the top storage so I can get down the road to a RTT, when I can get funding together.

Along the same lines, and no matter what option, what are you guys doing for showers when you backwoods camp in your rigs. I ask b/c at tests I am around a lot of hotel dwellers, who have lots more cash than me.

I am always in full favor of running with what you have. as long as the issues are "minor", the saved cash from the contractors cap can to towards reducing the issues, installing a vent or two, building a sleeping platform with underbed storage. Does your current cap have windows and such already?

edit for shower

Tons of woodland shower options out there. you could leave an MSR Dromedary bag on the roof(heat up via sun) and a small tube for a shower. You could also use the same bag, and a deep bowl for towel bathing.
