Grill.. Looking for options

throwing this out there..

My current grill is a weber Q that i carry with me camping (Land rover Defender 90) its great but lets say.... big and bulky especially in the back of a D90.. and not what i really want.

I'm thinking of going a totally different direction and all charcoal and dual purpose...

i was thinking that a Snow peak Pack and carry fireplace with a coal bed and upper grill (and a griddle) could serve both as my grill and a camp fire for those places that don't have a fire pit.

anyone use one regularly? like this?

My goal here is a dual use item that packs up small.
It looks pretty good in theory but i would like some real world experience

is it a complete mess, made well, work well, and not a total Pita?

thanks

I've been struggling to find a snow peak fire pit, really cool item but rather pricey. Really only want it for the fire vs BBQ, anza borrego doesn't allow fires on the ground and my large weber kettle sucks to carry around, messy and awkward. Hoping to see some cool ideas here that are similar to the snow peak fire out

Good call on the volcano grill, def cheaper than snow peak. I was even thinking of a smokey joe, but they don't have carrying cases like this one. Might be worth a shot, any experience using it as a fire pit?

Nope, never used one. Ran across them by chance while hunting around for other stove ideas.

They look fantastic though. If you go that route make sure to post a review.

I had a cobb but the top grill came apart with the non stick worked well but small top ?
also I don't like non stick for camping prefer anodized aluminum or something for griddle or stainless for the grate

the volcano seems like a cool system cause propane or charcoal and can do dutch oven with the propane and a hood

I've got a Cobb...it's hard to really get it up to grilling temps...it's good as a slow cooker. I ended up making modifications to it by drinking holes in the bottom to introduce more air for higher temps. If I could do it again...I'd get a volcano...my .02

I'd suggest the Weber Go Anywhere Grill . It comes in either a charcoal or gas model. I have both and with a few upgrades makes for an extremely nice grill. I've added a lid thermometer to both, along with a stainless steel flavorizer plate on the gas model (replacing the porcelain coated steel factory plate that is prone to rusting out) and cast iron grill grate from Craycort (replacing the plated steel factory grill grate). You can also get a bit more heat output out of the gas model by tightening up a bit the gas pressure screw that is under the blue sticker on the gas valve. Both the gas and charcoal models will for example easily hit 600 degrees and with the cast iron grate put an awesome sear on a steak.

Here is a link to the cast iron grate: http://www.amazon.com/4Grillersjoy-...=UTF8&qid=1407510898&sr=8-1&keywords=go+grate

Here is a link to the stainless steel flavor plate (only needed for the propane model): http://www.ebay.com/itm/Go-Anywhere...587?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e85b745e3

Here are the part numbers for the thermometer and bezel. Just call weber (1-800-446-1071) to order. I think they are like $7 or $8 each plus $7 flat rate shipping:
> Thermometer Part Number: #60540
> Bezel Part Number: #63027

this grill bag fits either of the Go Anywhere grills perfectly, if you're wanting better protection of the grill while transporting:
http://www.amazon.com/Camco-57632-O...UTF8&qid=1396469789&sr=8-2&keywords=camco+bag

Here is the link on how to turn up the burner for more BTUs. Make sure you use a nice fitting very small screw driver b/c you can mess up the slot on the head of the screw if you don't: http://tvwbb.com/showthread.php?45132-Gas-Go-Anywhere-increasing-heat-and-sear

You'll also want to make a wind protector on the air inlet on the burner tube to keep the burning from blowing out on a windy day. See post 17 in this link: http://www.walleyecentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=49486&page=2

BTW - weber makes a carry case for the Smokey Joe: http://www.amazon.com/Weber-6555-Sm...qid=1407513129&sr=8-1&keywords=weber+joe+case

...though I'd still recommend the Weber Go Anywhere over the Smokey Joe given the bulkiness of the Joe. The W-GA is just so nice and compact.

Great setup there with the cast iron grates. That's a winner for sure being so compact and with gas option or charcoal. Thanks for sharing!
