Hello, i am new to this forum but not necessarily off roading, or the backpacking/expedition mind set. I am getting very interested in an expedition rig, i am however, at a cross roads and am completely lost. My budget will be very tight, and will need to buy the vehicle for 8k and under... I am a dodge fan, and currently dd a ram 1500. but for my expo truck i am looking at a 1st gen cummins, similar to the doitall dodge, or a 3rd gen 2500 hemi. it will be a reg cab, long bed, 4x4 either way. i really love the cummins, but cant afford one in a 3 rd gen, or one in a decent 2nd gen. but i can get a 3rd gen hemi in my budget. i have heard of the cummins going for many hundreds of thousands of miles and like this aspect. i am leaning to the 3rd gen hemi however because this is what im more familar with... i can only afford a high mileage hemi, as in 150+. my question to all you more informed, was would buying one of these trucks and putting more money into make sense? or am i just asking for trouble getting a gas engine with alot of miles on it, and are there ways around the durability of these engines, to make them last more like diesels are known for?
sorry for a confusing question. i can help, and give more insight if needed. Thanks for looking!
