Kodiak to Arctic Circle to Houston via Continental Divide/ALCAN - solo

Quest, I will think less of you as a human being if you do not take the Dalton Highway all the way to Deadhorse (It is pretty much impossible to get to Prudhoe bay as the oil companies own it. you can take a $60 "arctic ocean tour" that takes you to a man made lake but not the arctic ocean). Yes, it's a LONG drive, yes gas is $5.50 and the road is muddy and you might get a broken windshield.... But holy stinking cow is is worth it!!!!

The drive to Prudhoe Bay from Fairbanks was nothing like the other forums I've read claiming that it was something reminiscent of a Flintstones episode. I managed a solid 40-50 mph on the mostly paved road and never once worried about running out of gas. Granted, it's not fall/winter when the roads are iced over and camps at half operation or closed, but none of the reviews were done during those times either. Lots of hunters and lots of traffic to the pump stations/maintenance areas, so even if there is an emergency, there are options for rescue/help. I am definitely very interested in coming and redriving it in winter.

There is a mercantile at Deadhorse for fluids/car repair items, and definitely bring your own food. The camps are really expensive (kinda a given considering where they are) and the food isn't worth it. Except the boston creme pie at Coldfoot camp.... That and they have a small selection of Silver Gulch beer and a few major beers for enjoyment during lunch/dinner and the two hostesses are pretty cute and friendly.

Everyone I met was very affable and for the most part willing to talk for a bit with little provocation.

There is a lot of road repair going on to be aware of, and lots of flaggers where they are smoothing over the road. Definitely be aware of the big rigs, while they have right of way, are generally pretty easy to talk into letting you pass. There are plenty of places to camp overnight for free if you don't mind primitive camping and waking up next to a river on an arctic tundra with no real sounds outside of the occasional big rig tear assing down the road with 6 lightforce light blaring the dark into submission. and on that note, he ************** at me for my rigid hyperspots and 20 inch light bar.

CB - definitely
extra gas - off season definitely, tourism/hunting season meh
spare tire - duh

Awesome stuff.

Being that I'll have the family with me in a rented RV I know we won't be going all the way to Deadhorse, but I'll get a taste for it and probably want to go back.

Thanks for sharing the info and details.

There were rvs on the other side of Atigun pass but they were all hunters not families. Either way the Arctic Circle and coldfoot camp are pretty much where the fun stops lol. After the pass it gets boring unless you get lucky and see a lot of wildlife. I didn't see wildlife unless you count roughnecks.

Next trip I'll drive the whole way in my Xterra :)

How's the weather holding out? Looks like it's just cool, cloudy, and raining? Get all that out of the way before we get there if you would please!

Post some more pics

It's not bad actually. I'm at dinner right now but I'll work on pics/thoughts over the next few days/nights since I *SHOULD* be relatively stationary.

Instead of going into Edmonton then to Calgary, I opted to hook a right on 40 out of Dawson Creek and hit up some back roads which paid off amazingly with jasper and banff national parks.

Stopped in Calgary for the night to pick up some stuff for a friend and then headed south to Montana with a quick stop on 2. How can you NOT stop at a place with a name like Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump?!

Then I stopped in glacier national park and after getting a $75 citation for coolers in the bed of my truck, headed to see a friend in Flathead lake. I didn't get many non personal pics while at flathead because I somehow got roped into crewing a sailboat for a regatta, but we came in 1st in our class for the sprints despite the quick onset of a short timeout for a 30 knot squall and downpour.

And this kinda sorta catches us up. A planned stop in Bozeman fell through thanks to a Marine buddy getting sick so I headed south into Idaho.

I'm currently sitting in twin falls headed towards Bonneville salt flats before I head back for an appointment in Idaho Falls on the 4th.
