Expo/Camp Trailer on the cheap

So one Saturday morning I was looking through the local craigslist and stumbled upon an old very cheap UHAUL trailer. I called the guy and went and had a look. It was rough and small, but I was bored so I bought it. First picture is of what it looked like when I got it, second is what it would have looked like more or less in service.

Tore off the wood sides and the plywood floor to expose the metal floor below. It wasn't worth savings so it had to go.

I'm a complete novice when it comes to fabrication, so don't laugh. I knew I needed bigger tires and wheels so back to craigslist where I found a full set of steel jeep rims with serviceable tires. Then it came time to widen the axle, this would have made me nervous however I had basically no money into the trailer so what the hell! Off to the steel store to buy a chunk of receiver tube to create the sleeve.

Great find... Those uhaul trailers are known to be built pretty heavy duty. I believe they are galvanized also, so no rust. I was looking for one a while back and everything I found said they are next to impossible to get a hold of. Apparently, uhaul doesn't put them out of service often like they do with older trucks. They drive these trailers into the ground, and then recycle them.

Didn't care for the look of the bumperets, so they had to go.

This one is not galvanized. Had to cut a few areas out and patch in repairs due to rust.

I then plated the fenders and painted the frame. Took the tailgate off and tried to straighten out years of abuse. Ended up cutting a channel out and putting in a brace down the center. It's much straighter but not perfect.

Pickup up some bcx plywood for the new sides and scored (questionable) tan and green exterior paint from a buddy of mine. Not enough of each color so I mixed them....hmmm maybe just a primer
