Patrols - restoration projects

Now my next question is, he wants to trade my Unimog 404 for both of them. I'm kind of a toyota freak, but I always liked the patrol. Should I trade?

Beats me. To big of a question with not enough info.

Do you like your Mog? What is it worth? Do you like working on trucks? Do you like trying to find parts for rare vehicles? Are you hoping to make money on this venture? Do the Patrols run, drive? Rust or rot issues? What do you want to do with the Patrols?

Cheers

My goal here is to have two rolling chassis, the 64 and the 67. On top of this everything stripped down, bagged and tagged ready to restore all the various parts. All body parts we plan to use need to be stripped of every single part in prep of sand blasting. I am nearly there now, less than a day left in work to get there. At that point I can pack away all the body parts and other parts and work on the chassis. The plan is also to hot water pressure wash both rolling chassis as well as a slew of other parts. See how that goes, big project as I have a whole bunch of stuff to wash besides just two rolling chassis.

Rented one of these. I would love to own one but they are expensive.

It did the job nicely but of course it makes a HUGE mess. I did the cleaning over big tarps in order to clean up the mess. Any ways, the result is after one day of work, two clean Patrol rolling chassis.

That is the 64 there, it was filthy, had from 1/4" to 2" of funk on it. Some I am sure nearly 50yrs old, some baked or cooked on, nasty nasty nasty. I am happy though as now I can work on these trucks.

This is the motor out of the red 66 soft top pictured earlier in the thread. That truck is currecntly at the upohlstrey shop however I pulled the engine and trans before sending it on it's way. The engine is soon to head ot the machine shop for a rebuild. This drivetrain was some filthy I didn't want to work on it, ha! Well, it is pretty clean now.

OK, I'm confused now. How many Patrols do you have? How many threads do you have going right now.

I love these old trucks, but I could never own one, because the desire to keep it original would be polluted by the instinctual urge to modify it. They are too cool in stock form.

Myself, I have three Patrols. A 68, a 77 Ute and my 83. Here at my place is another 4 Patrols that are clients. I think I have four threads going on Patrols.

And we don't get enough of your Patrol threads :) If the rules of the 25-years old restriction can shrink to at least 10, that means you can get the updated Y61! We get lots of US-spec used cars here as they're cheaper and most of them have low mileage.

Ran into some problems on the 64 Patrol we are restoring. It lived it's life in Aspen, Colorado and plowed a driveway for 40 some odd years. Unfortunately the snow plowing duties damaged the frame at some point.

Plate welded on the frame rail, no damage can be seen yet.

removed plates and found frame is buckled and cracked under them. This is RHS, you can see the buckle in the frame, top just behind the shackle hanger. Also buckled on side facing camera at the front of the shackle hanger.

This is the LHS, the side that cracked. The frame rail tore up top and on the outside edge. The old tear is at the weld just behind the holes on the top and just behind the small holes on the side facing the camera.

it was repaired many years ago but not repaired very well. Here you can see how the frame rail is distorted form the damage.

This is the backside of where it cracked. Not good.

This could be repaired correctly. However it will take a fair amount of work. Strength is very important here too since the shackle hanger holds the front axle under the truck. It appears to me the snow plow must have hit a curb or something at speed and caused the plow to be forced under the front end of the truck. Something had to give and it was the frame rails. The owner of the truck was given options and rough cost to fix this right. This 64 came with a 67 parts truck. That 67 is in stellar condition so it was decided to use the frame from the 67. Unfortunately that makes this a non-matching numbers truck but sometimes budget has to be the deciding factor. That as well as even if kept a matching numbers truck it will have a repaired frame which could bring down value. So I will be proceeding with working on the 67's frame rather then spend any time on the 64's frame. Overall the 67 is in much better shape but it lacks an engine, now it will live again with the engine from the 64.

Cheers

Moving forward....

Preparing a number of large orders right now for parts. These will come from South America, Australia and maybe a few from Japan. All bearings and seals to rebuild trans, t-case, axles and steering box. Additional items too such as some engine parts, new clutch, brake parts and more.

67 frame and axles will be getting sand blasted in the next 2-4weeks.

Cheers
