Patrols - restoration projects

Working away on the 67 Patrol lately. Got it down to a bare frame and am starting in on frame repairs. Axles are torn down and all parts have been through the parts washer. Nice and clean now!

Pretty typical munched spot on the frame. These are big outriggers for the body mounts under the firewall. They stick out a ways and if a person drove over big rocks or what not these always seem to be munched. Well, got to fix them up!

This one is not to bad but I opted to replace it rather than try to straighten it up

Bottom side is fairly munched

Not 100% done with it, need to finish making the caps and weld them on. Also need to flip frame over and clean up patches a bit more. But there is is, no more munched frame outriggers.

The attention to detail you put into your builds is simply staggering. Bravo my friend, bravo.

Thanks man!

Here is another typical spot for problems on an old Patrol. This is the # 2 crossmember. This one is not all beat up and dented however, I have never seen one of these not packed with funk. Knowing this I had to pull the cap, clean it out and seal it up. This 67 is in really good shape but the #2 crossmember is no different than any other Patrol I have ever seen.

cut the cap off

and sure enough this Patrol is no different than any other

there is a reinforcement on either side of the crossmember, it is rotten on both sides.

Got at least one hole in the cross member and perhaps some thin areas.

Been working with a guy since last fall to get rubber reproduced for the old Patrols. This being all kinds of items from window seals to grommets to bumps to gaskets and more. Nissan didn't put hardly any plastic on these trucks but there is easily 100 different pieces of rubber on them. I contacted a guy late last summer who reproduces rubber parts for old Datsuns and asked if he would be interested in doing some for the Patrols. Well, he agreed! He just about has 30+ items in production and available to the public. I been receiving items the last few months to test fit. This is monumental because 98% of this rubber has not been available from Nissan since the 70's! Here is a few samples....

Just about every Patrol I have ever seen these quarter window seals are trashed. Even on the best kept trucks.

In my opinion this is HUGE for Patrol owners. For decades you have not been able to get this stuff anywhere in the world. It is really going to make a restored truck "pop" and look sharp.

Progress...

Once I was happy with how clean the inside of the #2 crossmember was I sprayed weld through primer.

11134045_785191248243040_652506602021425996_n.jpg

I made a re-enforcement plate for inside the cross member. Plate is 1/8" and ya I primed the back side of it too.

11036888_785191311576367_7126301795055542106_n.jpg

Had a few areas that needed to be dealt with in the crossmember. One other hole besides the one pictured above and one area I felt was just to thin to leave in place. So all up the crossmember got three patches, made from 1/8".

11016967_785191358243029_7807135687583289168_n.jpg

Took welds down just to provide a smoother surface, my thinking is, less for dirt/debris to grab on to. Drain hole went from 5/8" to 3/4" in size.

11133688_785191458243019_2178776381492651798_n.jpg

But of course on the outside, it has got to look like I never patched it!

I found two 67 Patrols in Idaho Falls which is only 100 miles from me. Headed there shortly to pick them up.
