Warn M8000 SDP

I currently use a Warn M8000 on the front of my truck and am very pleased with it... But I have always like the versatility of a receiver mounted winch.

Several years ago, Warn made the M6000 SDP (short drum portable) using a M6000, a 5" wide drum and 50' of cable. The idea of a smaller lighter portable winch intrigued me.

Fast forward to now... the M6000 SPD is discontinued (still available on amazon.com for about $1000)

There is another offering from Warn: the 9.0Rc which is of similar design but features a stronger 9000 pound pull rating and synthetic line, but is $1500+ on amazon

I know that the M6000 and the M8000 are very similar (only different gearing?) and the M8000 is still available for under $600 (usually less).

Could I raid the Warn parts bin and just get the short drum (28360 or 72578), the hex shaft (37964), and the shorter tie rods (32454)? I'd find a 50' length of synthetic line online.

I think the question is how much lighter (e.g. more portable) would it really be?

FYI, a WARN M8000-S is 55 lbs. (25 kg). The SDP with wire rope is 70 lbs. (32 kg.). If you're really looking for portability, I'd get an M8000-S Multi-Mount kit.

You would spend a lot of money buying all of the parts from Warn. It would be a quick and easy job for a machine shop to shorten the drum/hex shaft/tie bars. In fact you could do it all at home if you're handy enough and have a grinder, welder, drill, and tap set.

Yeah, I read at one point that the synthetic line will save 19 pounds over steel line (and roller fairlead), so if I was to do this project, synthetic line would be a mandatory consideration.

The M8000 with steel line is 74 lbs. (34 kgs).
