Windows 10 announcement

Microsoft recently provided more details about Windows 10, the new version of Windows. Versions of Windows 10 will run on phones, tablets, and desktop computers. Microsoft is helping developers write/re-write applications so one code base will run on all three platforms. The Office suite of apps will also be "universal." (Exactly how an Excel spreadsheet will look on a 4 inch phone screen has not been demonstrated...)

The first version of Windows 10 will be released in late 2015. There will be no charge if you're running the current version of Windows on your phone, tablet or PC. No charge during the first year, that is. Microsoft is moving away from one-time payment for software to the yearly lease model.

A public test version of Windows 10 will be available soon for members of Microsoft's Windows Insider program. Sign up here to join

If you're a Mac user, here are two ways to run the test version of Windows 10 on a current iMac or Macbook, at no charge.

I run Windows 10 developer using VirtualBox on both my Mac at home and here at work on a Windows PC. Works fine if you start with a 64-bit Windows 8.1 machine as the base.

Yearly lease on an OS? So if I stop paying the lease does that mean my machine becomes a paperweight? Linux will be picking up a bunch of new installs I think in that case.

I am more than happy to pay for any software that works right. I have paid for upgrade etc on mac programs I have bought in the past too. So its not a big deal.
