Microsoft recently provided more details about Windows 10, the new version of Windows. Versions of Windows 10 will run on phones, tablets, and desktop computers. Microsoft is helping developers write/re-write applications so one code base will run on all three platforms. The Office suite of apps will also be "universal." (Exactly how an Excel spreadsheet will look on a 4 inch phone screen has not been demonstrated...)
The first version of Windows 10 will be released in late 2015. There will be no charge if you're running the current version of Windows on your phone, tablet or PC. No charge during the first year, that is. Microsoft is moving away from one-time payment for software to the yearly lease model.
A public test version of Windows 10 will be available soon for members of Microsoft's Windows Insider program. Sign up here to join

If you're a Mac user, here are two ways to run the test version of Windows 10 on a current iMac or Macbook, at no charge.
