Truck Trend evaluated nine 2015 4x4 pickups, from midsize Tacoma, Colorado and Canyon, through full size to heavy duty. The test included the new Toyota Tundra TRD Pro and Ram Power Wagon, a GMC 2500HD diesel, a Ford F350 with diesel engine, and "half ton" models from Chevy, Toyota and Ford.

On paper, and in the opinion of three judges, the Ford F150 with Ecoboost 3.5L V6 came out on top. Two judges said they liked the GMC Canyon the best, and it finished in second place in the quantitative scoring. One judge liked the F350, one the GMC 2500HD, and one made the Tacoma TRD Pro his top pick. Basically, it just depends on how you see yourself using the truck.

I'd probably never buy a Powerwagon, because it isn't the type of vehicle I prefer, but it is one impressive truck. I ran the Cleghorn Trail in the Cajon Pass area of Southern California a couple of years ago. My friend (in a 4Runner Trail Edition) and I (in my Xterra Pro-4x) were pretty impressed with having just completed a very steep descent down a rutted hill, followed by a decent rock garden. After stopping just past the rock garden to admire where our trucks and driving skills had just taken us, along lumbers a Powerwagon down the same route, more quickly than either of us dared attempt it.
