M 416 spring over parking brake repair

When I did the spring over on my M 416 the J hook for the parking brake was too short. I never thought of using a coupling nut to extend the rod. I tried making a new J hook with a piece of 1/4 threaded rod and bending it. Not strong enough.

To solve this, I bought a 5/8 turnbuckle with a J hook, a coupling nut and a threaded rod. I used locktite in the coupling nut and jam nuts to keep the assembly from loosening up. It worked just fine.

I don't have any pictures but it is simple to do just remove the axle , turn it around and he shock mounts will have to relocated to the bottom of the axle.

What did you use for the shocks? Do the same ones work after doing the flip?

I need to do something about this, as my trailer is tongue up right now (I have 33s) and am about to go to 35s next month.

There are some pictures of the springover and the shock mounts and shock data on my old build thread. I run 33's but if I went to 35's I would probably get rid of stock shackles and use old CJ3 extended ones.

Just my 2 cents.

I was using some HD gas shocks but they seemed to too stiff to control the trailer. Although the trailer always stayed on the ground it bounced around a lot. I put back a new set of stock shocks and hope they will do a better job of damping. (NAPA part no. 94038 )

I'm running 32 10.5 15 tires aired down to 10lbs off road.

Mike,
What did you do to relocate the Cable Sheath tie downs on on the frame? I noticed after spinning my axle on it's wheels and then rotating the axle 180 so the brakes are now on top, that the little cable sheath tie down in an inch or two further back.

I don't remember .I did the spring over about 10 years ago and just got to the brakes. I'll take pictures in a couple of weeks.
