Tires Getting Spiked On Trail

Interesting. Had a group run this trail the first week of January with no issues. Weather sucked, but we did run into a couple other travelers that were friendly. Was considering another run this Spring but may reconsider.

GOOD NEWS, a group of jeepers from SEOJA fell victim to the spikes again this weekend and it pissed them off enough to find the spikes, hook onto them with a winch, and pull them out of the hole! It was a big plate of steel with spikes welded onto it that had been thrown into the bottom of the mudhole! It had a chain welded to it so whoever put it there could pull it out and pass without damage! It's gone now and the local Sheriff has been notified, since this is a public road!

My wife and I ride horses on forest roads frequently and never even thought about spikes in the water crossings. That would permanently maim a horse riding that trail, and if it threw it's rider onto the spikes when the horse stepped on one, the rider could easily be killed!

That would be murder.

Thats pretty messed up and that thing took some effort and time to fabricate. I hope they catch the person. I had horses for years and rode dirt bikes lots and got dumped into a few puddles I can't imagine what that would have been like if I had landed on a plate full of spikes! One thing is for sure if someone gets hurt there will be plenty of people out looking for the jerk off that did it.

Copied from the Red Dirt Jeeps Facebook, photo's attached:

I had heard rumors of 'spikes' in mud holes along K-Trail, alleging someone protesting off-road vehicle access to public property. The weekend of August 15, 2015 a group of 7 (including myself) learned it was no myth. As our group descended upon fire tower to camp for the evening, one after another, after another discovered flat tires. As a group we were equipped to air, plug and repair the damage just before nightfall. One jeep had one hole in front and one hole in rear driver side tires, others just front or rear drivers side tires with one hole and some with 2 holes in the same driver side tire equating to a grand total of (10) holes across (9) tires of (6) vehicles. My husband and myself set out to investigate as we were somehow the ONLY machine unscathed. Only difference, narrow tires. Upon approach to the ONLY mud hole since our last rest stop, my husband took a shovel and poked around until we both heard metal on metal. From the West entry, about a third of the way down he discovers a chain as it vibrated under his feet when he taped the object under mud and rock. Upon tugging the chain it was clear we had found something anchored in the muck. It wouldn't budge. He began to tap along and could hear the audible clank of metal on metal for approximately 3 feet. We proceeded to attach the chain to the winch of the Jeep and with some effort, out comes this plate welded to a rusty chain.
There it was. A 63" mud covered spike plate made of solid half inch plate steel. The off-road community can not stand idle and let this intentional act keep us from EVERYONE'S right to public land. Please share, tag and spread the word that THIS set of spikes has been discovered and EVERYONE who has been affected by this needs to individually contact the County of Pushmataha Sherif's office and ask for Deputy Peterson @ 580-298-2475 or 580-798-6765 to feed investigation and justice for this criminal and those alike.
Furthermore, if you are on this trail (or any others) never simply "chalk it up to a bad day on the trail"! Stop your party, INVESTIGATE and contact the authorities yourself instead of feeding into rumors, doing NOTHING and therefore allowing others to suffer the same fate. I can't count the times today and yesterday I heard "someone should do something" and passing the buck. Well I am doing my part and the more INDIVIDUALS and ORGANIZATIONS designate a specific member to report, the better chance we have at keeping public access safe for everyone

We had a similar issue in Arizona last summer. Somebody was making spikes from rebar and hiding them along popular forest roads. To my knowledge, they never caught the responsible parties.

I ran over one of these in 2013. 6 inch railroad spike destroyed my tire put in the woods by flagstaff, luckily i had road hazard ins

Has there been any update on this? Myself and a group of friends are planning on doing the K-Trail right after Christmas. Anything we should keep an eye out for? I heard that the spikes were found about 2 miles from the Fire Watch tower in the section that is usually flooded. I was also told there is an alternative pass that you can skip this. Any info would be great. Don't need any flats.

bump any new info on this? Would love to check this trail out in the spring with wife and another couple and don't really want to deal with Enviro Nazis or crazy locals.
