Lots of good info there with contact information for MRA Mountain Rescue Organization Teams. Most of them are affiliated with the County Sheriff's Department, but many allow civilian voluteers. I think all are volunteers and most are reserve deputies.
Be aware, SAR requires a large time commitment for operations and training. Make sure your significant other is behind you. SAR work has strained many marriages due to the time commitment and the pager going off at less than desirable times....like dinner time or walking into the theater.
If you still want to help...but don't have the time for the commitment to a SAR Team, you may want to see if your community has a CERT Team. http://www.citizencorps.gov/cert/ Here's a good place to start researching.
