255 vs 285

I am in looking at tires and long story short, my stock size is 265/65/17 I am looking at going to 285/70/17 or 255/75/17. My vehicle has a GVWR of 6,100lbs (curb weight of around 5,000lbs). Would I notice any negativity with downsizing to a 255? On or off road? The 255/75 is way cheaper then the 285/70 and weighs a lot less. But my main concern is contact patch (on and off road) and wear.

For what its worth I am looking at BGF Mud Terrain KM, Hankook Dynapro MT, and Toyo Open Country AT II..... mainly.

I have the 255/75 KM's on my Tundra. It still feels just as planted on the road as it did with 265/65's. I've never had any issues off road, and I've done lots of soft beach sand driving.

With a light vehicle like yours you should be good. I had to go bigger due to the weight of my truck. Still hate deep soft mud. Curious, with the BGF Mud Terrain KM, Hankook Dynapro MT, making the top 3, why the Open Country AT II and not the MT?

I'd for sure check out the Cooper ST Maxx in 255/80/17. Tall and skinny. Half way between an AT and an MT. I have a set on my 4Runner and love them.
