California - good luck... for the rest of the US - should be possible.

Do these have the Iveco engine? Wikipedia says they are based on the Iveco Daily...

Wonder what the reputation is with the Canadian Forces?

I've wondered if/when those were going to hit the surplus market. Look cool and good off-road ability but how practical are they for a private owner in North America?

They didn't seem to be well-liked within the Canadian Forces.

I've been trying to wrap my brain around this one. It's a 1994, and in CA any diesel older than 1997 is smog excluded; of course, it needs to meet Federal Emissions standards, so that would need to be checked. For some reason I thought there was a 25 year rule on bringing cars into the US, but I'm an Aussie, so I may have got that mixed up with importing Australian and European vehicles.

So if it doesn't have to pass smog, and is legal to import, what other reason would there be not to bring it in?

Cos if there's no decent reason, I'm bidding on it.

I don't think there's any grounds to import it without it being over 25 years old, but...
interesting thing is that they were built in Canadian factory (Western Star) and may have a Canadian VIN. You might be able to register it in some states, but California doesn't sound like a good bet.

The move to a smaller engine really got under people's nerves, but these things have been in service for 20 years and I believed replaced by an Italian job. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iveco_VM_90

It would be interesting to hear opinions over at steel soldiers

Here's what Canada had to say about registration when they had it up for government auction =

  1. This was a Department of National Defence (DND) vehicle. It has never been registered provincially.
  2. There is no registration with this vehicle.
  3. This vehicle must be inspected by a SAAQ recognized firm prior to being registered.
  4. This vehicle may not meet Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and/or Provincial Minister of Transport standards. Repairs or alterations may be required before it is roadworthy.
  5. Be sure to bid under the name that will appear on the registration. If this is a company purchase, register your company with GC Surplus and be sure to bid under the company's name.

These vehicles were barely operationally suitable for military service. Couple that with poor reliability, quality issues, rust problems, bad brakes, weak transmission, and a long service life of being overloaded and abused, I'd stay far away from one of these as an expedition vehicle. They might be fun for around the back 40 if the price is right, but only if you can see it first to ensure the frame and fuel tank havent rotted out

Hello,

I just bought one like this. And the chassis and engine are in superb condition.
My mechanic specialist in European car and truck was inspected.

Small precision, these vehicles actually had problems of reliability departing. But since 2000 the problems were solved.

For proof, look at these links with wm90 and vm90 or 10.40 iveco :
