Recovery strap nearly decapitates cameraman

Strap didn't get him the point of attachment that broke off almost did. Kinetic recovery works really well because high forces are generated. But to often sacrificing control and accurate measuring in the application. Not knowing how much force your generating results in danger of selecting an anchor or tow point that may fail. Video is case in point.

Never hook to the tow ball. stay away from the pot metal tow hooks. Should go without saying.

Also doesn't help when you're being a fool and standing within the reach / radius of the strap / rope / chain. And there's no drag weight on it, too. Need to stand / stay clear when that sort of action is happening.

yeah I am going to put this one in the Darwin box and say you should not be within reach or direction of travel of anything with energy stored in it like a pull

This one did not miss !
Makes me feel all warm fuzzy and superior since I dont do this nonsense.
Its staggering the amount of these videos.
Stand close to watch the action !

The ad I got on that video was excellent: CM rigging. Of course, CM would need to make rear bumpers, apparently…

lol all those jeep idiots needed to do was hook a second pull vehicle and slowly ease him out.

There are indeed a lot of such videos out there. Just remember than half of all people are below average intelligence. And stay well clear of them, especially if one says, 'here, hold my beer and watch this'.

might want to mention your link goes to a site with porn on it. hate to see anyone get in trouble

Somebody else mentioned they got a porn pop-up too, I did not experience that so had no way of knowing...my apologies to all concerned. I will edit with a warning.

[edit] better yet, I found the same video on youtube, and changed the link.

I always stand well clear, no reason to risk it. But I was still surprised at how far to the side it flew, I always figured it would snap more or less toward the other vehicle.

All depends on how the formerly secured object comes / springs loose. The energy can skew anywhere. Think of it as the radius of a sphere. And even that isn't safe if the object detaches from the strap too. I stay far away, preferably behind something I can duck behind. Saw a lot of stupid stuff like this long before the interweb. Seen some people terribly hurt, especially at places like Pismo and Buttercup dunes down by Yuma. Part of why I quit going to such busy places on 3-day holidays. No thanks.
