Storing Tire in Truck Bed

I hear you on that. American trucks finally copied Japan's winch system. The mount on my '86 F-250 was awful.
I use a ratchet strap stretched between frame rails to add piece of mind after having my winch fail after a bunch of Mexico runs on my '99 Dodge.
Rare but it happens.

When I bought my Dodge used from the original owner, he had a chain wrapped around the frame holding the spare because the cable winch failed. Seems to be a common failure. I have since upgraded tires and the 285s I have are just barely big enough to fit between the frame rails under there so I never repaired the winch system. I too am looking to make a in bed spare dealio. I also want to strengthen the bedsides a bit so they dont get floppy on the replacement bed I found for the old dodge. These newer trucks' bed sheetmetal doesnt hold up to the abuse of the older American fullsize trucks.

for old style trucks there's been brackets of varying design for many years
