Determining rear axle weight.

I have a 2006 10.6 Bigfoot on a 2000 Ford F350 Crew cab longbed 4WD 7.3L diesel with Timbrens and factory installed sway bars. I loaded it up with fuel, propane, water, my wife, our dog, food, and gear for 10 days off road.

I took it to be weighed at a local company that runs cement trucks, asphalt for CalTrans, and rock and gravel as well as renting and delivering heavy equipment. I told them that I wanted to know my total weight as well as my rear axle weight. They asked if I wanted the weight to be certified and I said that it was just for my information because they charge $35 for certified weight.

The total weight was 12,200. They had me pull forward so just the rear wheels were on the scale. The rear wheel weight was 7380. They then subtracted the rear wheel weight from the total and told me my rear axle weight was 4,820. My rear axle and tires are rated for 6830 so I figured I was OK.

The system they used to determine the rear axle weight didn’t make sense to me but I figure that they are the professionals with the license to certify commercial trucks so they must know what they are doing. I couldn’t find any confirmation on the internet so I wonder if any of you are familiar with this method?

Yep. I agree. You are a little over on your rear axle. 7,380 - 6,830 = 550 lbs overweight. My 1997 F350 rear axle capacity is 7,400 but my GAWR for the rear is only 7,000 lbs. Fully loaded with my camper, my rear axle weighs 6,580 lbs.
