LTT-MCC Marine Corps Chassis Overland Trailer Build

So I have been lurking here a while and now that I am about to embark on a overland trailer build, thought it time to start a build thread.

I have been itching to get an off road trailer for some time, but could not see pulling the trigger on a manufactured one due to cost and for the features I desired. I looked for a M416 but most I found where in terrible shape or the owner wanted too much. I started looking for a base to start with and came across the M1101 trailers. The M1101 is a great place to start but with its wide tall stance felt it was too big for what I wanted and would dwarf my 2015 Jeep Wrangler. Then I stumbled onto the LTT Chassis which is a stripped version of the M1101 used by the Marine Corps for specialized purposes. Being a former Marine made it all the more fitting to use. I won the trailer from PlanetGov for $825 and spent a day driving to Alabama to pick it up. My LTT is a 1997 built by Raytheon. From what I can tell and have read the frame is the same or similar to Schutt Industries Xventure series.

Here is what it looked at the time of pickup.

After getting it home, it was time for a good pressure washing.

Nice score. Eager to see your plans. I have a buddy in SC who built a sweet camper on that exact same trailer. Very stout. Semper Fi brother.

Looking forward to the build, hsestes. Take lots of pictures. Ditch that heavy pintle mount and surge brakes.

To split hairs, & really matters not about your otherwise cool trailer.
Maybe it bears Raytheons name, But a good chance was made by Schutt or Silver Eagle.
When I worked at Silver Eagle in mid 90s, A good lot of their trailers were sold direct to Raytheon to be upfitted to their latest hi-techy warfare system.
I expect in selling the finished System to the military it all gets badged a Raytheon product.

Interesting info. It would be nice to know exactly who manufactured it. A quick Google search on the contract # listed on the trailer placard reads :

"Raytheon E-Systems, Richardson, Texas, is being awarded a $6,845,946 modification to a firm-fixed-price contract for 431 high mobility light trailers (M1101); 216 high mobility heavy trailers (M1102); and 647 jack adapters. Work will be performed in Richardson, Texas, and is expected to be completed by May 31, 1999. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. This is a sole source contract initiated on Dec. 19, 1996. The contracting activity is the U.S. Army Tank-Automotive & Armaments Command, Warren, Mich. (DAAE07-94-C-R014).

Either way, like you said about splitting hairs, nevertheless I have a stout trailer to start with.

Thanks - I will try to document as much as possible on the build.

I do plan to ditch the pintle, brakes, axle and HMMWV wheels/tires - basically start with the frame, and then build up with new lighter weight axle, matching Jeep Wheels, new/longer tongue design, storage, and camper design.

Got the center section of support rails stripped out. Planning to keep the fenders and sides and will build an aluminum base for the flooring.

Here are several pictures of my newly rebuilt 2011 Schutt Industries LTT. It's much lighter without the TorFlex 4200# axle and it tows great now. I'm still looking for aluminum fenders and a good design for the box. Something expandable that I could sleep in would be awesome. It needs to be light. Sheet aluminum is off the chart price wise. Not sure which way to go. The last two pictures show it with the shortened tow bar and lower spindles. Watching your thread closely.

Today's mission was to tackle the axle and get the trailer down to a manageable height and weight. I have heard reports of the M1101 axle and wheels weighing 500+ lbs. After dragging them around today I agree.

Trailer going into surgery.

First step was to remove the wheels and cut out the brake lines.

Can anyone confirm the weight? Anybody need a good set of HMMWV wheels/tires, along with a heavyweight trailer axle :) They are up for grabs!
