Where to get a drum heat guard for syn. cable. ?

I have a rock/chaffing guard only but no heat guard/sleeve for the drum; the older Amsteel stuff didn't come with one it seems.

Anyone seen a Kevlar sleeve for sale? All I can find is entire ropes that come with one but no single heat-guard for sale. Checked all the usual sites and searches: Masterpull, ebay, Amazon, several off-road retailers... ?

I have considered an aluminized sleeve which are sold in the hot-rod markets for various purposes, protecting wires and hoses near exhaust/turbos, etc, but most are pretty short or can get a little expensive if longer. This is a good example but it might get bulky. http://www.improvedracing.com/heat-...uminized-kevlar-velcro-hose-sleeve-p-564.html

These sleeves might work too but it's hard to tell how they will flex.

Mr Gasket makes a cheap sleeve which I assume is fiberglass. This might be a great solution but I question how hard it would be to thread the cable inside it. (1/4-7/16" size) www.ebay.com/itm/Mr-Gasket-6326R-Re...5-L-Heat-Protect-Wires-Hoses-USA/121387614949

DEI is known for thermal products and they make a 1/2" sleeve that might be good too. http://www.ebay.com/itm/DEI-Enginee...leeve-1-2in-x-1ft-Bulk-per-foot-/131803369787

Anyone happen to know how long the cable is on the first wrap of an M8000?

Don't worry about it. I've been running synthetic for nearly 15 years without a head guard. As long as you don't power out your winch for 100ft, you'll be fine.

Agree with Max. No issue for years with mine. I'm guessing for the 99% that's the case. McMasterCarr, MSC, Grainger all carry different sleeves for hydraulic lines. Perfect for this if you do want something on the drum.

Don't power out the winch for long distances, that will solve the issue as long as the brake is operating correctly.
5-10 feet is fine.

Do use a small piece of webbing to do this....

That will help you keep the right amount of line on the drum to prevent over stressing the end termination and attachment point to the drum.

What about the covers for TIG lines. They should be about the right size and they can handle heat (well the good ones can, some will just be nylon.

The other thing to consider is some the tubing used for climbing (making slings) Like THIS

There's a reason you're having a hard time finding a "heat gaurd". The rock/chaffing gaurd is sufficient. I bought a bunch extra from MasterPull a few years ago for ~$0.50/ft
