3.5L; Engine "Thump"... not a knock or tick [1999 Montero SR], What might it be?

> 112.000 miles... never a sound, until today.

Recent work taking place:

1] Body lift... the radiator surround is not in place [so no chance that this might getting struck].

2] Disassembled the air intake & installed a snorkel, air intake is not yet connected to snorkel.
Metal clamp is not in place [which holds in place the MAF sensor & the rubber intake tube], but everything is intact.

3] Changed out a wheel hub & installed new brake pads [great pedal pressure].

Started up the truck to move it, and this weird "thumping" sound eminates from under the hood... source would appear to be directly underneath the engine cover [plastic decorative piece]. Have yet to remove that as it was getting dark, & had been a long day... does not sound deadly, but sure is annoying and downright off-putting.

The "thump" is very consistent & rhythmic ["thump, thump, thump"... no, "thump, thumpity, thump"], approximately more than once per second [but definitely not sounding like several hundred rpm's]... might it be a solenoid or a vacuum issue?

I have yet to find this symptom explained anywhere on the internet... can someone point me in the right direction?

UPDATE: Monday morning... went out & started up the truck... not a noise to be heard.
Took off the decorative engine cover... nothing out of place or amiss.
Confounded as to what could have caused this sound...
Still wanting for an answer.

All input is greatly appreciated, and thanks for your consideration!

Most of us remove the plastic cover and toss it, they reduce cooling efficiency by holding heat in and blocking airflow across the engine.
