Today's cell phones can make fantastic video. If you're looking to improve the quality of your video product, check out this new product.

Tiffen has a Kickstarter funding project for a Steadicam designed for use with smartphones. Instead of relying on weights and inertia like most small stabilizer systems, the Steadicam Volt uses electric power, just like the big Steadicam rigs used in the movies. This product won an innovation award at the 2017 CES show

The typical action movie bounces all over the place, leaving the viewer feeling seasick. The stabilized movie keeps the viewer's attention on the content, not the wobbly motion of the camera.

The Kickstarter is fully funded, but it's still possible to place a $139 pledge for a package that will retail for $199 when it's sold in stores in a few months. The package includes two rechargeable batteries, each good for 8 hours of use. The Steadicam Volt weighs about 1 lb.

The Steadicam Volt is designed to hold cell phones in landscape format. It will accept a phone up to 80 mm wide, so iPhone 7 Plus and Google Pixel XL will fit. Steadicam also has a cellphone stabilizer called the Smoothee, but it's not a powered active stabilizer model. It depends on inertia and counterweights.

The Steadicam Volt will improve your video, no question. Don't forget to improve your audio, too. The sound recorded by the camera without external mic is pretty poor.
