    Default Am I crazy?

When I was little I almost sort of despised them but now I find myself really digging on the old Grand Wagoneers. There are all of these butch and hip 4wd's out and about these days but something about the "woody" looks and classic style that I find appealing. I know there are some issues with electrical bits on them but drivetrain-wise they seem pretty bullet proof. Anyone here run one of these trucks? I'd almost want to build one mildly just to be a bit different from all the popular rigs you see these days. It seems like they can be picked up on the cheap, but then I see people selling low mileage or restored examples from the 20's to 30's! Yikes!

You know, I can't say that I ever DIDN'T like them, just never really paid much attention to them. Lately, however, I've seen a few around, and some for sale, and I REALLY REALLY want one. It won't happen, at least not remotely soon, but they are pretty cool. Great factory drivetrain, and tons of room..

    so, naw, you aren't crazy!

I've been looking for a clean one myself. Prices range from dirt cheap to insanely expensive. I'm not really sure how they can sell for $20-25K, but I see that asking price all the time.

I think it would be the perfect family platform for me if I swapped in a modern engine/transmission combo.

Yeah, the prices are all over the board for sure. It would be nice to milk a bit more mileage out of them for sure. Something with fuel injection or diesel would have to help out there it seems.

When I lived in Crested Butte, CO my roomate rolled his Ford Ranger. He was looking for something to drive for the winter on the cheap side of the scale. He found this late '70 Wagoneer that the Australian Freestyle ski team had left in town, basically abandoned at a mutual friend's house. The thing was hideous! They had painted every panel a different bright color and wrote on the side "World Kickboxing Team". It hadn't been run or started in several years. We went over, aired up the tires a bit, dropped in a new battery and it started right up, even with the old gas in it! He drove that thing all year with zero problems too. I couldn't believe it.
