Thread: Unimog (NON CAB OVER) expedition camper build up.

Default Unimog (NON CAB OVER) expedition camper build up.

Unimog 404's are not a good candidate for cab over. To much frame flex. Truck Cab would smack into the bottom of the cab over when you get twisted up offroad.

Anyway.... my Mog had an electrical fire (old wiring) so the refurbrish/upgrades have begun. Follow along here

    Part one- Removing the Cab

Part Two- Fabricating a Cab Rotisserie to make it easier to do alll the body work and painting.

Total rewire. All drivetrain is OEM (replaced w/NOS back in 97? and used rarely since) Power plant switched out to a never fired 5cyl turbo diesel in 97 as well.

Very nice. What transmission/gearbox options does your mog have? Some combinations can yield incredible low range performance.

Have you decided on a color?

I have the normal 6sp tranny but it has been modified. Its sorta an 8speed tranny but sorta not. It has Great great Granny Low, Great Granny Low and then Grany Low. After that is 3 more upper gears stopping at a 1:1 ratio. (6speed) Usually the gate between low range and high range is part of the main gear shift. This gate moves from low range to high range right after second gear.

Well mine has been modified. A a 2x4 shifter plate was installed. This adds in a lever for manualy shifting between high and low ranges. DONT SHIFT BETWEEN HIGH AND LOW on the fly Don't as me how I know this. Due to this modification the main gear shift no longer moves things thru the low and high gate. Low range is gears 1 thru 4. The high range is gears 3 thru 6. (thus its sortal like an 8speed) Yep each range shares gears 3 and 4.

Like most Mogs this rig has available only the low range gears in rev. Because of the 2x4 plate that gives me the bottom 4 gears available in low range where typically only the bottom two are available in rev.

There is a gear set you can add that gives another two LOW LOW LOW LOW LOW LOW get out and jog a mile while your Mog travels 1" kinda low gears. Maybe some day I'll find a surpluse one I can buy and install at the same time I actually have the money availble to purchase it.

As for color.. Im thinking of the Grays, Silvers, Browns, Tans Combinations that you see on motorhomes these days.

pics may not be available for long.

Well it will be as classy as inexperienced ol' me can make it. Which may not be mutch. An early 80's Scamp travel trailer will replace the one ton steel box on the back of the Unimog now. This steel box was converted to a ruff camper by the previous owner. Think of it as a steel lined tent. The box was a former military communications (Radio Box). This will gain me about 1000lbs back before I go adding a roll cage and water storage to the camper. Overall savings 300to 500lbs. Swapping to this camper will also allow me to stand up! Radio Box is only 5 or so feet tall in the middle.

The mounting system from the base of the Radio Box will be used to mount the trailer. This base sits on two pivot points; one rear and the other aft, to allow the ladder frame of the chassis to torsionaly flex underneath it. If you mount a camper directly to the chassis it's flex will rip it apart. The cab has a central pivot point in the front too. Actually, the engine and tranny are mounted on pivots too. Yep, the ladder frame on this thing can TWISSSSSTTT (up to around 14 degrees deflection from the horizontal plane). That's one reason the 404 Unimog is so famous for their offroad abilities.
