Something else to consider is the ratio of Diesel to unleaded that is produced during the refining process. The ratio is somewhat variable between a specific range with the domestic refineries setup to refine more unleaded and the rest of the world pretty much setup to refine more Diesel. Apparently switching from one method to the other is not all that easy either.
Having said that... I love my Diesel vehicles... gassers just don't compare to the rush of torque of a Diesel.... even the little 1.9 liter is impressive for its size.
