I love the old style Colemans. As a young boy....growing up in Seattle. I remember waking up in camp on the Olympic Peninsula.....to the smell of eggs and bacon as Dad cooked on the Really old Coleman!

Brings back great memories every time I fire it up.....and smell that smell!

Now that is really bringing back memories.
My parents use to rent a trailer a few times each summer for us to camp in at the Olympics during the 60s.
Quinault , Kalaloch, ect.

The trailer had the propane lamps inside, an oven with burners, but they also cooked outside too on a Coleman stove.

Coleman historians?

Does anyone else remember when the fuel tank on a gasoline Coleman stove was cylindrical? As I remember, it was painted a sort of metallic copper color. The tank in Scenic Wonderrunner's photo is designed to leave an air space in the tank for expansion. The cylindrical tanks didn't have that. I'm guessing they were discontinued in the late sixties or so.

All this talk of ancients.... I think I need one of those. Too bad there are no garages sales around here. :(

Maybe someone would keep an eye out for me? :)

my opinion isnt much but here it is,,, i think the old colemans are great and reliable good way to cook if you dont mind pumping white gas, there is a propane conversion for them that makes it easier to use but it takes something away from the whole expeirence. for something you can buy used for under $20 you cant go wrong,

i think just about all the modern small tank style stoves are about the same quality for money spent, meaning any two $20 stoves will be the same regardless of manufacture as will any two $50 dollar stoves. i dont like that they rely on things like rubber gaskets and/or o-rings that can and do get brittle and fail in my neck of the woods pretty quickly.

i like the simple nature and rugged looks of partner stoves but i think they are an overly expensive product for most of us who dont bang around our stoves, the burners are the same as anything on a $40-50 stove but the body is built to handle being thrown around. i like it but i dont need it.

and finally there is something to be said for the old venerable single burner that screws on top of a small tank. i think everyone should have one.

Actually, I think the burners that the Cook Partner uses are better than the ones on the $50-80 Century or Coleman stoves. As stated earlier, I have both of these. The Cook Partner is much hotter.

I would agree with you that the $50-80 stoves are adequate for most peoples needs.

On the plus side for the Cook Partner, they are very serviceable. Therefore, the overall life of the Cook Partner may make the stove cheaper in the long run. That would ring true for someone who plans to use it a lot and for the next 20+ years.

Coleman Fold-n-Go

We use a Coleman Fold-N-Go and it rocks! It folds up easily for transport and storage, is efficient and is big enough when deployed to use to full sized pots/pans or even a full sized griddle. Love it, love it, love it!

The burners are rated at 10,000 btu each, the regulator stores inside the unit and the cooking grates flip over to store easily inside as well.

not to beat a horse, but i'll get more into it. partner uses 10k btu burners on the 2 burner stove that most of the users here have. i would assume they are made in china off the shelf burners but i dont know that.
you can get anywhere from 7,500 to 15k on any of the store bought stoves, just depends what you get, and they usually print the btu on the box. if you really think your partner stove is hotter, your "other" stove must be the 7,500 btu stove, try a 15k BTU, or better yet step up to a real camp stove, like camp chef and have 30k btu per burner at your disposal.

as i stated i think the partner is a great product, but it is just a 20k btu max unit with a tough shell. ya gotta remember, partner was made specifically for the whitewater rafting crowd where not only stainless construction but a heavy box is warranted,, for most of us its just a trendy must have to impress others.

i think the best bang for the buck in any stove on the market today for the average vehicle camper is colemans perfect flo series, stainless where it counts and auto ignite, i like the 3 burner, it has two 11.5k burners for good cooking and the 3rd is a 5k burner. for 100 bones its a good compromise.

It has been said, the Partner Steel stoves were conservatively rated at 10k btu but I have nothing to back that up.

I do have two Camp Chef stoves with the 30k burners and they are a real pleasure to cook with for large parties.

I think the coleman fuel/coffe/bacon/eggs/hash browns smell is like perfume.

I suspect people who didn't grow waking to those smells are put off by the fuel smell. I know my wife was when I first introduced her to camping.

I think she kind of digs it after thirty years though. I fire ours up about once a week to cook stir fry, the Wok can make a mess. Plus I think it gets hotter than the house stove. She mentioned how good the stove smelled last time.

On the Coleman pumps, it's pretty easy to un-clip the cover and pull the pump piston out. The piston is a little leather cup, just oil it up and re instal it. I use vegtable oil since it's usually handy when I'm cooking.

another vote here for the coleman fold-n-go, used it many times and love how compact it folds down, we also use the little carry case that you can get for it that holds it and 2 of the small propane tanks

the only negative is no windscreen like in a "normal" 2 burner stove
