JC Higgins was a popular thing with Sears back in the day they offered bicycles with that name, and a ton of hunting equiptment. My father had some of the stuff.

There was (is?) a Higgins boat building company somewhere in the South. They built, among other things, some of the PT boats. I can't recall ever reading the "J.C." prefix attached to any product of that company, but that doesn't mean that it didn't happen.

I understand that J C Higgins built the boats that US forces used to get on the beach at Normandy.
Andrew Higgins built boats for the government. J.C. Higgins was a Sears employee. There is no connection between the two. I grew up with all things J.C. Higgins, since that was about the only place my dad would shop.

Here's a little history on the subject, straight from the Sears archives.

Renaissance Redneck
I think this might be newer than what was intended for this thread, but it does qualify for "collector" plates where we live asit is more than 25 years old! It is our new "basecamp". We have decided after spending 5 months in our tent trailer that we really don't need all the "stuff" in our lives. The Airstream is under-going a complete reno as we speak, and will become our full time home starting in about a week! This will be the way to save cash for more multi-month trips...

As you can see, someone previously painted the exterior, (which I am stripping) and man did they ever have skills with the caulking!

Here's my little "canned ham" travel trailer. It's about 16 feet long. Field and Stream brand; made in the late 60s. Four years ago I was out looking at a house to buy and brought this home instead. It had last been registered in 1975. It's finally climbed to near the top of my projects-to-do list and I hope to use it for the first time this summer.

That is similar to what my parents would rent every year back in the mid 60s when we went camping each summer when I was just a wee lad.

Kitchenette up front that became a bed for my sister when she came along before she got married, and I slept in the rear in a fold out canvas bunk that was over my parents bed below me.

Those old trailers were cool.
I think we got the Shastas most of the time.

this is our 1967 SEARS camper. We bought it on first sight and used the same day.got 2 summers of use out of original canvas and now it sets waiting for funding to have the canvas replaced. Has nothing inside, really a tent off the ground but we loved pulling it behind our jeep wrangler.I look forward to redoing it and being able to get way off the beaten path and camp.

Check this group out

My wife is a member of the Sisters on the Fly. It is a group of gals that enjoy their older trailers and doing different and unique trips. Often wrapped around a fishing trip. My wife, Mo, is in there with our old 84 Coleman pop up, and our AT Horizon and will be updating her photos when we pick up our teardrop next week.

Go to Sisters on the Fly and then check out the gallery. In my ignorance of all things electronic, I do not know how to do a link to their site. They really have some nice trailers.

This was how we rolled when I was a kid.

My dad driving, my mom on the passenger seat and me...siting on the engine hump, no seat belts, no anything to keep me from going through the windshield.

According to modern day scare groups...I shouldn't even be alive. :victory:

Not a great shot of it. 1964 Aladdin trailer. Says it's a 12 foot, but I don't think they included the tongue.

Post up your Vintage Trailers....!

.

No link availble, and I'm not sure what the BBS rules are on this, but my buddy's dad can't seem to give away his old (I think) Higgins; not even for the scrap value of the aluminum (the recyclers won't touch it). All the mechanicals seems to be there, I guess the cloth is dead or absent. The thing hasn't rolled for 30 years, at least. PM me if you're really interested and I'll make an introduction. It would be good for spare parts, too, I assume. I guarantee you'll get a goooood price, if you bring your own flatbed! :)
