Talking A new to us 1997 Toyota HZJ80R Landcruiser

After nearly 4 months of patiently looking, scanning the used car websites, crunching the numbers we finally picked up our first 80 Series Landcruiser this past Thursday.

    On to the details.

It’s a 1997 Toyota HZJ80R Landcruiser in DX trim. Also known as poverty pack!
1HZ 4.2L 6 Cylinder naturally aspirated diesel engine
    H150F, 5 speed manual gearbox.
HF1A part time transfer case with a 1:1 ratio in high rage and 2.488:1 ratio in low range.
    Differential ratio is 4.11:1.
Making the final crawl ratio is 46.3 if my math is correct!
Factory 45L sub tank (total of 140L of fuel)
164 800 Kms on the clock, two owners since new with excellent service history.

    The aftermarket accessories include:
    Toyota snorkel
    Dual battery system
    Scrub rails and side steps
    Hayman Reece tow bar
    40 mm raised suspension
    Cargo barrier
    Roller drawer system
    TJM winch compatible bull bar
GME TX-4200 UHF radio (CB in North America)
Custom sheep skin seat covers, front.
    Fire extinguisher

Because the existing tires failed to pass safety inspection, it now rolls around on a new set of these…

Items that need to be addressed immediately:

Put tools and recovery gear in drawer system
    Diff breather extension mod
    Hi-Lift jack
Matching spare, current one is 7.5R16
    Shovel
    Prepare a comprehensive spares kit
On board air compressor for tire inflation and locker operation down the road.
    Replace OEM steering damper

Longer term changes once we use the vehicle on a few trips and figure out what’s more important. Also known as the wish list!

    Driving lights
    Awning and side panels
    Fridge Freeze
    Tyre Plyers
    MaxTrax
    Winch
    Lockers both ends
    Water tank
    Roof Top Tent or Swagg
Replacement rear bar with swing outs
    Aux. long range tank

    The possibilities are just endless!

Cool The irony of it all...

On the first day of ownership, I drove Martha to work in the new rig. We start talking about how things have finally fallen into place and of previous vehicles. We reminisce and have a good laugh about "The Bomb" but it was not going down without a fight...

At the next set of lights, we look over and to our amazement there she is, in all her glory! Funny coincidence or is it? I smell cruiser sabotage coming on...

Dead giveaway, "Rent A Bomb" sticker, white and mismatched hub caps, there is no mistaking it.

Default Proper recovery points on an 80

    Pardon the newbie question...
What is the general concensus on these front and rear mounted loops for the 80 series? Are they considered proper recovery points?

    Cheers,
    P

    Well done Pierre nice!

Those hooks can work, but have also seen them rip open. Ours are removed for something more solid mounted on the ARB bumper

    Pierre,
Congrats on the acquisition - let the mods begin!! Time for a new build thread!
Can't speak from experience with an 80 series - by those loops - seem to work fine on my FJ (have pulled enough folks out, using them).

    Default Congratulations

    Pierre,

Well, it looks like your patience finally paid off. Also great that a bunch of the mods are already done for you.

I find it interesting that most of the Aussie 4WD vehicles I've seen have cargo barriers installed. This is an excellent idea, and one that we should embrace here in North America.

That looks like an excellent find. Now, clean her up and go out and get her dirty and tell us all about it.

Wow. You have bought yourself a fine example of a LandCruiser. Congratulations. Those factory hoops will be fine for awhile, get out and use that thing.

I'm sure more than one ExPo'R is jealous!
