    Default Ratio

The gearing on the Gen II in the first picture, which is a 2.5TDI 5sp, is original 5.29 which is perfect for 35" and works fine for 38". This truck is lifted 50mm in the back and 30mm back. The rest is just cut out.

Most of the 38" trucks over here 4.88 for both 38" and 44".

Diesel + 5 speed transmission, and 5.29 gears, I could see how the gen II might easily handle the larger tires.

4.88 (sure it's not 4.9?) for the gen III might be pushing it with 38" and 44" tires with a petrol engine. Now if it also has a diesel engine and the 5-speed auto, I could see how it might still have some power to turn those large tires.

Out of curiosity, what was the source for the 5.29 gears? Is that the 9" ring gear or 9.5" ring gear? Gen IIs had both available depending on package and year.

    Default El Gato her soon..

Picked up this beauty from Grasscat a couple weeks back and put some 33's on her...Grasscat had already did a lot of hidden mods to the rig.

Working some more minor mods right now. Maybe I'll do a build thread on her soon.

The 44" gen III's are diesel with automatic.

Regarding the source for the 5.29 gears, they are stock on the '96 2.5TDI Gen II's.

Maxi, thanks for all the info. I sure wish we could get the TDI engines and the 5.29 gears.

    Default 93 Pajero ongoing

My second Paj, "upgraded" from a '91 to '93 JDM with about 50 000km, mint. Usual stuff: 2.5 TD, 5 spd manual, rear LSD. 2' rear spacers to compensate for loads, cranked TB's. New ARB and M8000. Aux. lighting, guages, remote start. Heavy duty Thule rack for box, bikes, kayak, whatever. Planning new suspension (probably OME or Ironman, ARB front locker). I find the General Grabber AT2's similar to BFG At's, but they actually grip on snow and ice!

Pulls my new AT Chaser trailer perfectly! Alaska trip in August...

parked next to a montero today. A seven seater like those pictured above. Man! I was floored at how much bigger the monty is than my Cherokee. Tripped me out!

    very nice rigs!

Do you all find that they are reliable as daily drivers? My XJ is super reliable, but I'm looking for a bigger rig, likely.

Havent done anything other than normal maintenance to mine....then there's the "self inflicted" damage like axles from offroading...but its bullet proof IMO
