First off, sorry for the not so inspiring photos. I'm a new member and this is my 1990 Montero LWB 5spd with grey cloth interior. I purchased it for $300 dollars from a guy who said the head was blown. Turned out that one valve guide had dropped causing the exhaust valve to not shut completely and therefore blowing partially burnt mixture out the exhaust. From what I found the valve guides are a common problem on the 3.0, so I rebuilt both heads and replaced them with the improved guides containing a circlip that stops them from dropping. This mostly happens on the exhaust valves because of the amount of heat they are subjected to.
Now I'm replacing the passenger side front axle ($30 used free shipping on ebay) because the circlip holding the axle spline into the hub came off in the past somehow and over time the splines on the shaft wore down to a smooth surface. Replacing the auto hubs with superwinch manual locking hubs ($50 used).
Its amazing how well this vehicle is built after working on it!! I'm going to take it out in the mountains for a couple test runs after I get this axle installed.

That's a great catch! Welcome to the community.

If you want any ideas on your Gen 1, look at Cruisin's build. He easily has set the precedence for Gen 1 builds.

But again, beautiful vehicle and welcome.

Thanks! I just read through Cruisin's build thread, you weren't kidding. That is one amazing rig!

Here's my '03 Montero XLS. Pictures are kind of an evolution that's happened over the last 2 years. More to come as time and money permits.

    Default My 96 Montero

I just bought a 1996 Montero LX a few months back and I think it is one of the best all around 4x4 I have ever owned. I have not had much time to build it up but i have put on 33 inch tires and taken off the running boards, I also installed a nice sound system and just cleaned it up. Ive been on a few trails with it and am looking for my first long weekend to go up Bee Canyon truck trail to Idylwild. I plan to put on a different roof rack and mount my goodies on it, other than that it is awesome on or off road just the way it is. Here is a pic.Montero.jpg
