Hopefully someone will correct me if I'm mistaken, but I'm pretty sure you must take them in order. I know when I took the test they let anyone who wanted to take the general to do so in the same day. Most don't or if they do they don't even come close to passing, but it isn't unheard of. Each level grants you access to certain frequencies. When you go to take your general, they want to know what your call sign is and you have to show them proof of your current license.

A good question though, anyone else know different?

That would make sense to take the tech test first. Thank you. Hoping to take the test mid March.

Need to take them in order - I did take Tech followed by Gen on the same day when I got relicensed. Missed general that day by one question

That is the worst, A buddy of mine did that on his Paramedic test. He missed it by one point. Fortunately I passed.

Well it had been 20 years since I was licensed & a few things had changed

Also like the not to technical write up - as for the hobby aspect to Ham radio some will naturally get hooked

Do you need to take the tech exam first or can you take the general first?

You technically can take it if you want but if you pass the general and dont pass the tech you dont get a license. You will get a credit and need to take the tech before a license is issued.

Most VEC testers will not allow you to take the general until you have passed the tech test.
