12 volt blanket - garage pre-test

Bought a 12 volt blanket this week. Made by "Justin Case". It's 36" x 56", has 30 and 45 minute timer and no information whatsoever as far as current draw.

It's about -5°C in the garage and the voltages were measure either at battery rest or immediately after blanket shut off. The battery is an Energizer deep cycle off my tent trailer. All testing was at 45 minute time heating time. The battery recovered a bit in between runs. Takes about 10 minutes for blanket to get warm.

Rest 12.64V - 12.33V (15 min rest) 12.44V - 12.32V (15 min rest) 12.44V - 12.31V

Rest 12.41V - 12.21V (no rest) 12.21V - 12.15V, 12.31V after 15 minute rest

So it would seem that the blanket is good for 5 cycles of 45 minutes before the battery is down to about 60% charge.

I tried to find a link but the manufacturer does not have the blanket on their web site - don't know why

It seems that a blanket with a "constant on" state and temp control might be better since there's not so much energy being used for getting up to temp. Also, then you could have it set really low to just take the edge off.

I may order this one tomorrow.

I would get the
Full, single control 54" x 60"
one which would be perfect for the medium AirLand tent.

Even though I just bought the Buddy heater by Mr Heater, I would like to try one of these pads too.

This is the unit I'm looking at: http://www.electrowarmth.com/fleet.php.

Looks like a very similar unit, seven heat settings and all. And the model# of the one posed above even starts with "EW"...hmmmm

I purchased this same heated pad and have had a chance to use it several times with temps in the 30's and am completely satisfied with its low amp draw and comfort it provides. I fire it up on high an hour or so before bed and be sure to keep it covered with a good blanket, bag, or down comforter to hold the warmth. Climb in and turn it way down for the rest of the night and you will be quite comfortable. Upon awaking have a small heater ready to fire up to warm the air and you have the ultimate setup. I forsee an Espar or Webasco heater in my future but not for a while as they are quite pricey. There is something to be said about a heated blanked pad you lay on vs. one that you cover up with - this thing rocks!

I like a 12V electric blanket stuffed inside my sleeping bag on those nights when the dog's water dish develops thick ice inside the Dormobile.

I've found that my 12V electric blanket pretty much drains my group 24 aux. battery by morning. I figure during the night my refrigerator only serves to keep the food inside from freezing and my water system will be frozen solid anyway so I fill the tea pot before turning in. It also means I need to be on the trail after breakfast before washing the mornings dishes just to recharge the battery. But waking up toasty warm is worth it to me.

Toasty worm on winter camping. Works for me.

I ordered a 54x60 pad the other day, they just called and said that size is no longer available.
They also took it off their site.

I am getting a 42x60 instead.
It will not cover the full width of the AirLand tent, but it will be good enough.

They still show a 54x60 on the site where you got yours though.
