    Default Pine Grove, Nevada

Pine Grove, Nevada is one of my favorite ghost towns. I hadn't been there for many years and so today took a quick solo trip up to have a look. I had read somewhere that mining had resumed at Pine Grove due to the current high prices for gold. I was concerned that the place would be fenced off, or worse yet, obliterated.

    No worries.

    A few pictures:

A historical marker at the entrance to the site. Gold was discovered in 1866 and the town prospered until about 1880. Peak population was about 600 people in the early 1870s. At one time the town had five saloons, three hotels, and a dance hall.

The remains of a five-stamp mill. The casting reads "Joshua Hendy Iron Works." This company was a world leader in mining equipment and shipbuilding technology and was located in San Francisco, then later, in Sunnyvale, California. I used to live just down the road from the Sunnyvale site.

A substantial building; probably a boarding house. The lower floor has become partially buried in runoff soil.

The most interesting thing about Pine Grove is the cemetery:

Pine Grove is in the Bridgeport Ranger District of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. It's about 15 miles of dirt road south of State Route 208. Coincidentally, it is just across a valley from the ranch owned by Barron Hilton. That's where Steve Fossett took off from on his final flight on September 3, 2007.
